So when I was coming to a stop the other day I heard a splashing noise coming from my trunk/hatch area. Well today I got a chance to investigate it and found something that just made my day...

This is what I have to remove in order to get underneath, pain in the ass, it's not like removing a spare tire

Well it's time to sell it. Done got water in the car. I'll take that rust bucket off your hands. LOL. Hopefully you found where it was coming in at.

Where did the water come from, bad seals on the hatch?

I sure would love to know the answer to that. I'm going to have to find out where the water is getting in before I put all that stuff back in

I had the exact same thing happen to me about 2 weeks ago. I came to a stop and heard a splashing sound. Before that I kept noticing a odd smell in my car too from the water just sitting there.

Its your rear trunk seal causing water to come in,same thing happend to my brother in laws 1g, did your system get damaged?

Not that I know of, I haven't been playing music in my car lately though. My amps and subs were dry thankfully. What do you mean specifically when you say it's my rear trunk seal? I really want to get this fixed so any help is greatly appreciated.

He means the actual black rubber strip that's suppose to waterproof the hatch. It can get corroded/cracked and so on. That's the first thing that came to mind to me as well

Any recommendation on where I should buy a replacement?

Nah dude, its an option.

It saves you the hassle of having to kill the hooker before you stuff her in the trunk. Just toss her in, and by the time you dump the body, she'll have drowned. Two birds, one stone

That frickin' funny!

 glad your amps and subs survived. House down the car or bring it to a DIY car wash and spray it, then search along the inside seals for leaks.

How long do you think the water's been there?

You could start with something like this Car Part Wholesale - Auto Parts and Accessories Catalog - Metro Moulded Weatherstrip Seal - Door, OE replacement

I don't know if you can still get OEM replacements from the dealership. You could call and ask. Does the rubber look pretty bad?

This is the adhesive that I used to fix the rubber on my Mazda http://solutions.3m.com/wps/portal/...2K94_nid=PS7GT62TVDgsMDCVJW7L8SglMBHZ1VR0K9bl
There doesn't seem to be a difference between the 3M black or yellow though.

Probably not too long, its only recently been raining a lot here (some parts of the county I live in have flooded). There's no bad smell and hardly any mildew.

I'm going up to my friends dads house tomorrow, I was thinking about using his garden hose so I can run water over the hatch for a while and see if I can spot the leak. I'm going to take a good look at the seals tomorrow as well, as the guys above ^ have suggested it could be the problem.

Befoe you spend money on a new gasket check the drain holes and make sure they aren't plugged up. When you lift the hatch you'll see the drain holes. Pour water into them and see if the level goes down. If it doesn't just run a coat hanger or something like it down the hole to open it up.

+1
This is what i was going to recommend you check first as well. You can also clear blocked drain lines with compressed air.

^^^ Yes, one or both of your drains are clogged. Same thing happened to me. Pull off your molding in the trunk and check your drains, there is one on each side. I had to replaced the hose completly on the passanger side.

I feel your pain man. When I left for work my car didn't have any glass in it and had to be moved outside so I asked a friend to plastic it all off. Well, I guess he did a pretty crappy job because when I got home from work (gone for 3 weeks) there was a lake on the drivers side of the car.

Drains are fine, but I think I did find the problem (no doubt about it really). A while back I had to install another tail light, well I don't think the seal is doing its job very well...

Poured some water into the hatch area to see if the drains were clogged, they drained the water fine but...

...anything that got past the drain hole and went further down to where the passengers side tail light is would start spilling into the trunk as you can see in the picture (circled green)

Anyone have any suggestions? I have some black liquid weather strip adhesive here, it wouldn't look the prettiest but I think it would do the job (no one would ever see it anyway)

Can you not get a new taillight gasket? That or make one yourself from some thin foam.

- UPDATE -

Figured it out! Yes the foam gasket for the tail light was the problem because it was missing! Apparently I forgot to put it back on when I replaced the tail light :coy: I didn't feel like making one so I went down to the local junk yard, found a white GSX down there...

Something i've alwas done if the car doesn't have them is to put a hole in the "pop out" drains (those plugs you pointed out with "who doesnt' love rust") they are supposed to be the lowesst points in the area and are just for draining the car for whatever reason it may be filled with water., just drill a small hole in the center about 5 - 8mm in diameter, and hit it with some sealer/paint if need be (some are not metal and don't need protected)

this way, even if it gets in it has many places to exit before it can spread and pool up. I've never noticed any bad side effects from it either, no body rust forming from it, no puddles, no lake-mitsubishi that's for sure

damn, man sorry that happened to ya..fargin imports LOL
