Heard splashing in my hatch, not happy with what I found

Something i've alwas done if the car doesn't have them is to put a hole in the "pop out" drains (those plugs you pointed out with "who doesnt' love rust") they are supposed to be the lowesst points in the area and are just for draining the car for whatever reason it may be filled with water., just drill a small hole in the center about 5 - 8mm in diameter, and hit it with some sealer/paint if need be (some are not metal and don't need protected)

this way, even if it gets in it has many places to exit before it can spread and pool up. I've never noticed any bad side effects from it either, no body rust forming from it, no puddles, no lake-mitsubishi that's for sure

Drilled small holes in the plugs for drainage (just in case) that should prevent me from ever having to endure this again
