Hard Starting 1g Need Advise

Ok here goes. 91 talon awd 5 spd with minor mods. Car had over heating problems and I fixed those. (head gasket blew) Then the alternator went out, so I bought a new alternator.

Now after I put the alternator in it started to take forever and a day to start. In turn I bought a ECT sensor and threw it in... bam problem fixed!!! Nope wrong answer that only solved the problem for the weekend when I really didnt need the car the most. Now the problem is back and is worse!!

It will crank and crank and crank, then stumble like it wants to start. Then after the battery winds down, I throw jumper cables on it and crank a little more. All the mean while I am dumping fuel like mad, but it eventually starts!! One time a buddy for some reason disconected my CAS while i was cranking and it back fired (I think through the intake) and then plugged it back in and I cranked it a couple more times and it fired right up!!!

Anyway its getting spark and lots of fuel, the colder it is the more of a pita it is!!

Any suggestions?? Could the ECT sensor I got be faulty???

What's the ECT sensor? I think you may have a simple issue, you just need to isolate it. Swap out some of the ignition items with know good one from friends cars. I have went as far as ECU's to find the problem.

Engine coolant temp sensor....the one that the ECU reads. Yea I was thinking about doing that, I was going to try and swap out the power transistor, coil packs and the CAS. Do you know possibly if the TPS would have any ill effects on the cars starting abilities if it was bad??

Have you ever had the ecu out? Sounds like something fishy is going on. I finished my winter beater over the summer, and was having the rough cold starts problem. I changed my cts, but it didn't help. I ended up yanking the ecu and saw how terrible it was. Luckily I had a rebuilt 90 ecu laying around and the problem was solved.
