So there are all these guys on eBay selling GM MAFs with the screens removed and ported. They claim more horsepower and so on, but has anyone used them or know if it makes a difference good or bad?

A maf sensor isn't going to give you more power, it will allow you to attain a higher power level if you are currently maxing it out, but no major increase just by changes the sensor.

Are you maxing out your maf sensor?

I am going to change to the blowthrough MAF setup, not just replacing mine with a GM one like some do. I suppose I don't know I am maxing out my airflow right now, I do have relatively significant mods and just assumed that there would be an advantage to run the setup.

You probably are still ok at this point. However upgrading your MAF would be recommended. I would go with a blow-through GM MAF w/ Translator. However, I would shy away from those "Ported w/ Screen Removed" Ebay sensors. The GM MAF is going to have plenty of flow capability. Changing the sensor, especially by removing the screen, will make the sensor harder to tune. This will be especially true at idle. A basic setup from dsmparts or SBR would be plenty for your application and future upgrades.

Ya, I think I am going to get a used 3" or 3.5" GM MAF from the classifieds or something for about $40 then get Dejon Tool piping. Thanks guys.

You don't need it, so why waste your money on it?

Cause you can vent your bov ROFL j/k

On a serious note though I would suggest the gm setup to everyone that is going from smic to fmic asit will descrease lag because your removing the restriction of a sensor before the turbo:thumb:

In case your wondering why I said if your doing a fmic to do it it's because you can't install a gm maf inline with stock rubber lines without a lot of dumb custimzing like reducer to metal to stock rubber :notgood:

When I had it on my car it didn't help lag at all.

Ported sensors make the car run lean, idle bad and do not improve performance

WHat did you have intake wise before and after the gm setup cause if you go from 2g to gm maf then you might not see any gains but usualy you will but going from a 1g maf to a gm is a big diffrence especialy with the screen off.

Right same idea as a hacked MAF but when you have a tuning device that can compansate then you see gains cause your flowing more at the same psi levels.

Not really....
Porting/hacking the sensor isn't really going to do jack but make you manipulate the settings to get it to run right. The GM guys go it to lean out the mixture, possibly giving them a little more power. I hardly doubt a stock gm maf is any retriction what so ever, especially when used in conjunction with a stock throttle body.

Plain and simple less restiction more flow. I wouldn't care that a gm maf was ported though just remove the screen and you have a maf that will be good for whatever you will throw at it.
