There's nothing different between a halogen bulb housing and an HID housing, technologically speaking. I guarantee that if my Eagle Talon came with HIDs way back in '93, inside the headlight housing wouldn't be any different. The lens may be cleared, if anything.
WRONG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! we're not talking about Acuras, We're talking about mitsubishi eclipses. Basically what you're trying to tell me about headlamp housing design is Your Opinion and what You think.

Selling individual DOT-compliant HID capsules isn't illegal.
No, but putting them on a mitsubishi eclipse IS!!!!!!!!!!
A DOT legal kit installed in a halogen housing Is Not DOT legal!!!

That's just another asshole on the internet spreading the common virus of misinformation.
Pot calling the kettle back!!! hahahhahahaahaha!!!!!!!!!!! !!!!!!!! !!
Who made you an expert just because you threw some HID bulbs in your stock housings!!!?! hahahah!!!!

Halogen filament bulbs and HID bulbs do not spread light the same way. They can't be used in the same housings because of this. What makes you think that the housings work the same way to accomodate the differences in the way each bulb emits light?

I can't belive you actually belive what you think about hid's is true!!

sure, they might look alright in your housings, but it's not the Correct way, and it's not Legal.

So now that we have the housing debate covered, why don't we start talking about how there are HID bulbs that are over 4100K

awd4g63:

Read THIS for some info about the legality of HID kits and some usefull info.

If you really are interested in this kind of lighting, listen to pinknuggit (and myself) and head over to the HIDforum.

I fail to see how demonstrating a light source against a target 6' away shows anything useful. Last time I drive, I was looking at objects a shit load further than 6' away from my car!

You're telling me that at a certain range the light pattern is going to suddenly and dramatically change? I didn't know that light curved that dramatically in such a short amount of space. Do you think that hotspots, and errant light outside of the desired beam cutoff do not appear when viewing the output at a range of six feet? How is it possible for undesired light to suddenly appear farther down the road? If I'm not seeing any glare above my beam cutoff at 6 feet, there is not going to be any blinding glare farther away. Also, please explain how you are going to see glare if you are projecting light down an empty road. Glare is light that is projected up, past the desired cutoff point of the headlights. Visible glare is projected at an angle near parallel with the road and higher. This is light that you are not going to see reflected on the road. This "glare" light needs to be projected on something above the horizon, things such as road signs, trees, the interiors of other cars, a wall, or hey - even a garage door, for you to be aware of it.

BTW, last time I checked most all of the modifications we do to our cars are not legal for street use. Are you going to remove all your non DOT approved modifications Omega? You sure are complaining a lot that HID retrofits are not DOT approved. We have the common sense to act safely in our modificed cars (well I'd like to think most of us do). What makes you think we don't have the common sense to remove our HID's if they were truly emitting such high levels of glare (as you would have some believe) that they were becoming a safety hazard to others and to ourselves (due to the lower than stock light output like you would also have others believe).

Suddenly and dramatically change... no, but it sure does spread out the further down the road you get.

My comment about the 6' referred to the nice cutoff that you claimed to have. My mums’ car has a nice cutoff 50' from a wall. My friends WRX (with JDM projectors) has the same cutoff as the other car, but at ~30'!

Does your Altima have projectors or a normal reflector design?

I sure am not complaining that the HID kits are DOT approved. I bet I can find at least 2 kits that claim that they are though. It frustrates me that people buy these kits and think that they are all hunky dory. That one site that made the HID bulb move up and down did make me laugh though... and there is some poor SOB out there that thinks they are the best thing since sliced bread!

There are far more irresponsible/morons out there than there are those with some gray matter between their ears. You and I both know that.

Here is the thing. These HID housings are most of the reason you get the cool blue/purple/whatever colours. A slight tweak of the cutoff plate and you can have all sorts of fun. You take that same bulb and put it in a halogen housing and it won't have the same "cool" colours. So what do you do? You can't redesign the housing (too much time/money involved) Hmm, how do I get the colour I want.... bingo, dip that bulb in paint! You now have the blue/purple/whatever colour tint that the true systems have for a fraction of the cost. I leave the rest up to marketing and the uninformed masses.

Take a look at a lamp with a shade on it... then take the shade off and have a quick look. If you don't think that the light is brighter without the shade (same as non coated bulbs), then... i will shut up.

regarding the 1G pop up headlights, those who had tried the ebay option, like me, have noticed that those blue color bulbs don't work so good, but how about getting a oem like H4 bulb? does that help? i also realized that ebay kit doesn't come w/ the conversion harness, so you gotta change the wiring yourself,

anyone tried the Hella conversion kit?

The Hella conversion kit has been on my Eclipse since before I owned it. I've had no problems with it at all. Would love to get a HID conversion.

I wanted HID for my spyder and I did a lot of research as to how it should be done properly. Retrofitting is truly the only way to go. I have ECE compliant HID's from a european BMW mounted or retrofitted into my 2g lighthousing. To be truly HID you need 3 componets: Ballast, capsule and most importantly the lens. I spent the money to do it, and performs as expected. I want to post a pic on this email to show you all but i do not know how.
