I just bought my first DSM. It is an ECLIPSE GSX. When I start the car I can hear a grinding noise coming from the front of the car. I popped the hood and listened for it. It sounds as if it is coming from the left side of the motor. The noise can be heard on idle. Cant hear it while driving, the exhaust is to loud. Anyone have a clue what it could be.

Driver side or passenger side? Some people mean the passenger side because they are looking at the car from the front. But the driver side is technically the left side. That is why I am assking, so I can be sure.

crank pulley grinding on the crank position sensor? i had that problem once, just a suggestion but could be any number of things.

if you are looking at the front of the car it is on the left side. I had a few suggestions from friends but I dont think they are the problem. One suggested that since the power steering pump is shot that might making the noise. The pump is on the right hand side, and there is plenty of fluid. One also suggested it was the intake because it is not held firm by any brackets. I checked that and it is fine.

Maybe a clutch problem. Like loose flywheel bolts or spring came out of the prssure plate. My friend had a flywheel bolt come loose and you would never know it by driving but it would make a noise when sitting still. Can you hear the noise if you rev it up from under the hood?

Im gonna check that today, I havnt had anyone to rev it up while I listen for it. I think you may be right though. The guy I bought it from did some pretty dumb things to the car. He said he put in a new racing clutch. I can tell he did because of the feel of it, im thinkin he didnt clean anything out in there or re-assembled it wrong. When this guy put the FMIC on he ran the piping under the it. So I have only 3 maybe 4 inches of ground clearance in the front.

Alright, I finally had someone with me today and checked out the eclipse. When I rev the engine you cant hear the grinding noise. Im not sure if it stops though. The grinding noise isnt that loud it might just get muffled out by the engine and the exhaust sounds. But one thing I did notice. When the car is stationary and I put into 1st the grinding noise stops. You take it out of 1st and it comes right back. I think it maybe something with the flywheel. Any thoughts.

I would say its your throw out bearing, when they come loose the make a kind of grinding/metal on metal rattling noise. When sitting still you can hear it at idle but if you put the clutch in it goes away. Same thing with my car, I'm planning on getting it replaced soon.

Will it go away when you push the clutch in or do you have to put it in first for it to go away?

Im pretty sure it had to be in 1st for it to go away. I only had a few seconds to check on this b4 going to work so im not 100% sure.

If it goes away with just pushing the clutch in it most likely you tob. It shouldn't have to be put in first if that is the problem.

Thanks for the advice. Tommorow one of my friends is gonna help me out, he knows a lot more than I do about DSM's. Were gonna take out the turbo and rebuild it, install new intake pipe, new AFPR, new powersteering pump, and check that out. I hope all gos well and I dont have to spend to much more money right now.

Well, I finally had some time to work on the eclipse. Found out that the grinding noise is the TOB. Im just gonna let that be for now. The intake pipe didnt come with and adapter so I was unable to put it on. Anyone know where to get one. It is a 3" intake pipe. I need the fitting to fit the stock turbo.
