Hey Guys, Here's my problems. If im going more than 20 mph i cannot shift into first, because it grinds, anything under that its ok. If I push on the gas in first, and im gettin on it, and i go to 2nd, it mostly always grinds into 2nd. I have no idea why, my friend said that it could be the intake hitting the linkage, but i checked it out and it was a little close, but it looked like it was where it was supposed to be. Please dont jump to harsh conclusions, one at a time please. Thanks.

There are many threads here concerning difficult shifting. The 1Gs are known for this problem and worst case would be worn out synchros in the transmission. Before you assume that you should first adjust the shifter and cables.
You should find some help here.

Also try replacing the transmission fluid with BG Synchroshift. I found that this along with stiff shift bushings at the shifter and transmission solved the grinding.

It could either be both of those the syncros or you might need a new clutch or it could even be where you have your clutch set at. Try playing with the top bolt wit the peddle. Its the bolt that connects to the rod going through the firewall that engages the clutch. Play with that bolt and see if it helps. I think its a size 10 or 11 wrench.

You really shouldn't be trying to put it in 1st at over 20mph anyway unless you are in the middle of autocrossing or something and need to go back down to 1st at that speed. Especially on an old tranny with so-so synchros.

20 mph is fast to go into first regardless, I somtimes grind into first if i try to go in at 15. You've got a 15 year old transmission man, don't forget that. If you have to get into first for the life of you try double clutching and see if that helps and if you want to redline the mother in first, don't yank it into 2nd, wait untill the tach is down to 5g or so. If you try these techniqes and remember you've got a granny tranny you shouldn't grind as much if at all.

What the #### are you talking about?

On a tranmission that old I'm assuming that the problem is with the synchros, not the clutch disengaging completly because if that were the case then he would occasianally have problems getting into any gear right? So think about what a synchro is and what it does. It is kind of a mini clutch for each of your gears and they where down over time. There purpose is to catch the gear up to road speed. When they wear down they don't do there job as good and the gears don't engage as smoothly=grind. So if you double clutch into first at, say 20-25 mph and rev around 4,5k ( pulling numbers out my a$$ but you get the point ) then your transmission should be turning closer to your road speed, thus the sychros have to do less work and there is less chance of grinding. I'm sure you can figure out the theary behind waiting a bit to come from 1st to 2nd when your on it.:beatentodeath:

thanks guys, im going to try bg syncroshift, and im going to adjust all lines and linkage especially for where the shifting connection is and ill see about syncros if this doesnt work. How do i change transmission fluid on an awd tranny?

Under the intake pipe there is a fill and drain plug on the passenger side of the tranny. The fill plug is a 17mm, the drain is a 24mm. Loosen the drain plug and let the "gunk" leak out. Flip the crush washer around and tighten to spec (about 40 ft/lbs.) Loosen fill plug and use choice of lube (GM synchromesh, Bg synchroshift, etc...) I used a flex funnel and had the front of the vehicle on jack stands. It should take anywhere from 2.3-2.8 quarts. While youre at it, flush the transfer case and rear diff. Transfer case take about .5 quarts, rear diff takes .8 qts. give or take.
