Toronto,
My buddy just bought the Greddy turbo upgrade and intercooler system for his 98GSX Automatic.

During the install we ran into some trouble with the intercooler mounting, when we noticed that he has a transmission oil cooler that was in the way and not picutred in the instructions. Needless to say the cooler lines stuck out farther and we had trouble.

We ended up doing something kinda stupid, but it worked at the time. We cut that beam support that holds the hood latch on, so we could push the trany cooler lines back up against the radiator along with the powersteering lines. Then we mounted everything accordingly.

His hood closed with the front facia off, but when we put it back on, the hood latch wouldn't lock, because there wasn't anything to support it.
It closes sometimes though.

Anyways I just wanted to know what should we have done?

You could have just totally moved the stock unit, or remove all the stock trans cooling and go with an aftermarket unit with flex tubing and mount it where the stock IC was..

Last friday night I just installed a Greddy 24V FMIC on my A/T 2g. No problems. And that line in front of the radiator that you had to move was actually the power steering line. Nothing wrong there. I had to move mine too.
I just removed the bolt from that held the vertical bar in and cut through the welds. Then slid the power steering line around and on the other side. I bolted everything back together and zip tied the line to the bar. And put everything back together.

So you didn't have any problems with the Trany cooler being in the way. Cause we didn't want to bend those lines too much and accidentally break it.
We didn't for see that when we first started, and my buddy didn't have money to go out and get a slim tranny cooler, nor did he want to wait.

Those lines you speak of are the power steering lines. You can actually remove them without any problems. Up top at the power steering fill bottle, remove the rubber line from one of them, and remove the metal one from the other, use the already there rubber hose to loop the line back to the one you took the rubber line off of.

TRANNY COOLER IS IN THE RADIATOR!

No it isn't.... Not in a 98 GSX....
And I didn't think of the PS lines, because I switched to a smaller cooler with braided lines, and don't run a FMIC...

Nah, just show it whose boss. I didn't disconnect anything, just pushed them under the bar and secured them behind the bar. Then I bolted everything back together.

Had the exact same problem with my 1GB A/T. Installed hood pins ($15), then recently got "locking" hood pins ($20) from Summit.

Interesting :) I'll have to look at my chilton and see what its got....sorry for the bad info :p

If the car didnt have the tranny cooler in the radiator then the tranny cooler is behind the driverside air dam just like the stock ic is behind the passengerside air dam. Some E/T/L's came like that some had the tranny cooler in the radiator. As for the lines that run where the greedy ic is suppose to be, those are you power steering line/cooler. You have to move them behind the metal bar it attaches to so you get the clearance for the ic.

I have a 98 GSX, where is my tranny cooler??

This is true. Most 2Gb A/Ts have an external tranny cooler right in front of the radiator, on the driver's side of centerline. If you're not sure where your cooler is located, just follow the two hoses coming out of the top of the transmission and see where they go.

During my FMIC install a couple weeks ago, I removed the stock cooler completely in favor of a larger B&M SuperCooler and put it where the old SMIC was. It's a very simple install and provides better ATF cooling.

You just need some sort of metal strip that you can make brackets with (I got one from Home Depot), and maybe some extra 3/8" hose. The amount of hose that comes with the cooler may or may not be enough. I had used the hose that came with the cooler for something else a while back, so I just went and bought 6 feet of 3/8" fuel injection hose and used that-- half for the inlet, half for the outlet.

I don't have any pics right now, but PM or e-mail me and I'll see if I can take some for you.

ok here's advice from someone who HAS DONE THIS INSTALL PERSONALLY. the tranny cooler is NOT in the radiator it is an external cooler located in front of the rad. the in and out lines are same as stock fuel lines. i had same problem with my install. there is a section of these lines where a 90degree bend is made between the tranny housing and the stock cooler. (the bend is right on the side of the radiator) i simply cut both lines right before the bend and slide some russel stainless lines in place. cannot remember exact size of lines, this was almost 2 years ago they were a bi*** to slide over(which is good because they didnt leak) siliconed them up and put tiny t-bolt clamps over them. same goes for installing the lines on the trans cooler. i mounted it back in the stock location just behind the support beam. (you will find that the greddy type 24 fmic DOES NOT BLOCK ENOUGH AIR to cause you to need to relocte the cooler. although it might look better, the amount of air hitting your trans cooler should only be slightly more in the passanger side air dam than will sitting behind the greddy core. since then i have replaced the stock cooler with one from IPT and yes, now it is in the pass air dam, kit came with lines too with correct fittings which cleaned up my "temporary" fix. not trying to contradict myself, the reloaction was because the kit came with brackets and enough line for the relocation which was done for 90% cosmetics 10%function.

DSM trans coolers seem weird. This pic from the 95 Talon book shows it using both a sidemount and the radiator-cooler.

Not true. I don't have ABS and my cooler was in front of the radiator. I think mostly the 2Ga's were the weird ones.

Just to confuse everybody. Mine has ABS and it's in the drivers side location.

i have my tranny cooler right behind the front mount, the only problem was the power steering line. Usually you can just put the power steering line behind the hood latch post but my tranny cooler is in the way, so i just had to cut the power steering line a little shorter, and took thick fuel line and hose clamped it to the power steering line.
