OK guys I searched for an offest for a 1G AWD but the few threads that came up had dead links. Could someone point me in the direction of a good thread, or a good link to help me out? Im getting Gram light 57Fs at 17x8 or 17x 8.5 with tires that are 235/40/17. What would be a good offset to hopefully not use spacers? Is this size possible without rubbing the front tires on the fender well without spacers?

-Thanks,
Dustin

can someone that knows a lot about wheels and offsets and all make a list of what will work for our cars and make it a sticky? I've wondered this as well.

At least the common sizes like 17s and 18s, which offsets with which widths for which tires.

Can a 17"x7.5" with +40 run a 235 wide tire on a 2g? would it need to be 235/40 or 235/45? What about 245s?

I don't mean to thread jack in any way, I just figure some of you guys must know all about this stuff and it would be helpful to many people who don't understand it.

Did some searching and found a couple things worth looking at:

http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=231889

http://boostin.home.mchsi.com/rimwidth.htm

but clear information on wheel offsets is still difficult to find, and I'm still not sure which size tire to go with when I buy new ones. I have 17x7.5s +40 and am debating between 235/45s and 245/40s.

I have had 225s on my old 17x7s for a couple years no problem. 225s are 1.27 times wider than a 7" wheel. If I stepped up to 245s on the 7.5" wide rims, the ratio is 1.29. The ratio is not much different than what I've been doing for the past 2 years, so is it ok to use those wider tires now on the 7.5s?

8" width is a good size for DSM. Try to stick with offset between 43mm-35mm; if you want to fit 235+ try to look 40mm-35mm. A 1G can not "tuck" as good as a 2G, so the lower the offset the farther it will stick out past the fender. Since you have a 1G you should look for a 42-38mm on a 8" rim. With this you can run a 235/40 or 235/45 with no problems (depending on your suspension setup).

The widest RECOMMENDED tire you can fit on a 7.5" is a 235/45/17. You can find out wheel width size for any tire just by looking under the SPEC section on Tirerack.com

With the massive amount of wheel sizes and offsets out there that would be a daunting task for someone to take on. Some of our experienced members have put together some information that will help you figure out how to determine if a wheel size will work for your car though. You can find this in the FAQ Forum:
http://www.dsmtuners.com/forums/showthread.php?t=169437

FYI people, you should all be checking the FAQ Forum for answers too, not just doing searches ;)

Here's one that was listed in the FAQ Forum, not sure how nobody saw it:

Also, if you're looking to put wide wheels and tires on you should also check the Road Racing forum here on the site, since a lot of road racers are trying out different sizes.

Thank you Daniel and Chris. The reason I'm wanting wide tires in the first place is that I will soon be turbo'd, and of course fwd. It is not economical for me to get skinnier sticky tires that will wear out quickly as this is my daily driver. So to achieve better traction as well as longevity I think 235s or 45s in a standard tread-wear tire are what I should be looking for.

My tire width fitment (knuckle and fender clearance) and wheel offset questions have been cleared up, I guess the only thing I'm still not positive on is if I should stick with 235s on my 7.5" wide wheels, or go beyond the recommendation and get 245s. And there really is no answer for that question... just my preference. I don't think I will have problems with the wider tires since I don't push them to the extreme through auto-xing or anything.

I don't see any benefit to going with a tire that is wider than recommended for a specified width wheel. It actually might even be dangerous. I'd stick to the recommendation of the tire manufacturers and/or TireRack or other experts.

And I question the theory of whether the tire simply being wider will give you better wear characteristics. Wear is dictated by a lot of things, but I don't know if the width alone is as big a factor as you're thinking - especially when comparing a 235 to a 245 width street tire. Tire pressures, alignment settings, and driving style have way more of an impact than anything else. The money you'd save by going with a wider tire that may or may not last longer because of its width would be negated by the higher cost of the tire anyway I'd think. I guess you'd have to do some price comparisons and testing to find out for sure.

If you're doing a 7.5 width wheel, stick with a 225 or 235 tire. I'd only consider going 235 on that size wheel if I were going to use it on the track for a little bit of added contact patch. And even then I'd be using an R-compound tire that had stiffer sidewall properties. But that's just me. I actually have 225's on my 17x7.5 Kosei K1 street wheels at the moment.

i second the going to the road race forum. there's a thread i started that has gotten a lot of replies with good information.

FYI evo wheels are 17x8 +38 and fit with 235's

Perhaps I worded it wrong, but that was not my logic. I was saying I want tires that will give me better grip and traction than I have now. I will be turboed soon enough and I know I'll need any help I can as far as gripping the road.

In order to get that better traction, I assume I have two options. Stickier tires or wider tires. Staying with 225s but getting real grippy tires would be beneficial, but those types of tires don't last very long for a daily driver. On the other hand, if I go wider with 235s, or even 245s, I can get better grip but still use tires that will last for quite a while.

EDIT: for example, I could stick with 225s and get Yokohama Advans for greatly improved traction, but their tread life is only rated at 60 A A, while Kumho Ecstas have a tread wear rating of 400 A A. They aren't nearly as sticky, but I could get them in a wider tire to make up for it and have them last a whole lot longer.

My debate between 235s and 245s was only to determine the widest tire I should choose with my current wheels, not to figure out which will last longer between the two.

Sorry for the confusion and thanks for the help and advice.

Gotcha, sorry if I read it wrong.

Thanks for the links Chris, and thanks for the info Dan. This should help me out considerably for my wheel set-up on the project whip :D

One point to consider, the 10mm you'd gain in theoretical contact patch may just get tossed out the window, with the way the edge of the tire will be pulled to fit a narrow rim.
Not to mention that turn in would suffer, since the tread isn't "supported" correctly.

I guess I'm trying to say that, having a larger tire may not actually give you any more rubber on the road.
