well since i got the car running, it runs pretty good... only issues left are, it has a rough idle, its leaking a bit of oil ( but i got the gasket kit, so hopefully it'll be fixed), and when idleing it get about 3/4 hot on the temp gauge...

any suggestions?

thanks!

How old is the thermostat? If it hasnt been replaced in a while change it and see if it helps. Do you ever hear the coolant fans kicking on?

Stock temp gauge should not to be counted on. If you don't have one yet, get a decent datalogger.

You can then log the O2 sensor voltage, fuel trims, airflow, knock and actual coolant temps that the ECU is seeing, which will help you determine where the problem is if there is indeed any issue.

well the thermostat is original i believe, and i know the fans kick on... like i said its just at idle... how much would a datalogger run... i was considering just getting a water temp gauge...

Yes, that is what your looking for. If you have a laptop you don't need the pda then. You just need the cable. Search Pocketlogger, Mitsulogger, Evoscan.

A cable is only like $25 (don't quote me). I have dsmlink so I've never really looked into it too far. I just remember reading some posts about it. Maybe someone will chime in that uses it and can help more.

You don't necessarily need the PDA if you have a laptop.
Just the cable.

Notice the links at the bottom of the page for MMCD and Tunerstein downloads. Both pages actually have instructions to show how to make your own cable if you're good with electronics.

For the longevity of this post in the archives, here are the pages that are linked in the above linked ebay ad.

No, your external monitor is usually a 15 pin serial port usually female pinout (vga port I think its called). A db9 serial port is only a 9 pin and typically in a male pinout form on your laptop. You can buy a keyspan adapter that changes a usb to a db9 if you don't have the db9 port.

There is a confusing possibility that has been overlooked: DB-9 seriel and null-modem seriel plugs are visually identical. Internally, there are some pins that are switched. If you get a lap-top-specific cable, it will be wired null-modem style, and will not work with a palm unless you get an adapter. If you get a palm cable, then vice-versa is true. Null-modem adapters can be had for about $5 from a specialist computer-geek store. They will not have them at best buy. If you buy just a cable, and hook it to your laptop, and get a "can not connect"-style message, then you probably need the above-mentioned adapter.

The combo cable/palm/software kit is a good deal if you can afford to blow $50 for convenience. The same guy used to sell the same kit, but with a far-inferior cable. It had seperate female spades which you had to slide onto the correct pins in the OBD terminal. That was total BS considering that there was a guy selling proper plug-and-play cables w/ the factory plug for $25. I don't know if he's still at it, but those were good cables. He was out of Aurora, CO, or something like that. The cable came with a CDR with a bunch of different software, and was really well made. I got that cable, and won an auction for a palm IIIc for about $30. The thing is, you might win an auction, recieve your palm, and open it up to find that it doesn't work. Maybe the $110 combo deal isn't that bad for the convenience. Either way, the IIIc is bomb-diggety the way to go. Try messing with a laptop while driving a 1G...get the palm. The IIIc has a big color screen and an on-board rechargeable Li-ion battery. Mine goes months on a charge, since all I use it for is a diagnostic tool for my mostly-stock DSMs.

I'm glad to see you realize you need one. It will spare US a bunch of trouble!

BTW Get a new Mitsu thermostat! And what kept it from running at first?

well i got a bunch of seals, and i took the turbo off, and discovered there was serious shaft play and the exhaust housing was cracked :(... whats a good turbo to slap on there? i dont have much money to work with and i need the car on the road quickly...
