I got a little bored today and was getting a little tired of the factory white. So I ran to Autozone and bought 2 cans of Duplicolor High Performance Wheel Coating and a can of the clear too. I actually only used 1 can of the color and maybe half of the clear on all 4. I color I grabbed was called Graphite. It was a toss up between graphite or black. Then I came home did a quick clean and wetsand. Started masking off the lip and then I sprayed them. I did 3 coats of the graphite and then 2 coats of clear on each wheel. It actually looks pretty decent. It will hold me over till I pick out some rims. It would look alot nicer but my lip is all banged up. I tried to fix it but didn't succeed. More of a reason to get the new rims.:D I snapped a quick picture but it was getting dark. I'll probably snap some more tomorrow.

looks good:thumb:

what did you use to try and fix the lip? sanding?
Yeah I tried sanding. I started at 320 and worked my way up to 1500. There was just too many nicks.

Thanks for the responses guys.

I always liked the white wheels on the white DSM's.

Can't go wrong with black either though :thumb:

You wouldn't want mine though. Theres some rust issues I have to tackle this summer plus theres 106,000 miles on it. Dents here and there. Its really depressing. Since there was 1 owner before I had it last year. He was around 50 when he traded it in. Guess he didn't feel like keeping it clean the 10 years he had it.

I forgot heres a picture from this morning. Kinda see the color a little better.

Black w/ polished lip = totally outplayed :notgood: :notgood: :notgood:

Who cares if it is outplayed? It looks good and he likes it. You could say silver wheels are outplayed too because almost every aftermarket wheel most people see on a car is silver. So why buy wheels period? BTW they look nice.

I did the same last month. I stripped mine and sanded down to bare metal. You can clean the lip up it just takes a hell of alot of work. Heres a few pics

You did a very nice job. What was your process for cleaning up the lip?

I strippped the lip with paint stripper when I was doing the whole wheel this took all the clear coat off it. Then I just sanded like a madman for about 3 days. Starting with a 400 grit IIRC and working up to a 1500 wet. Then i polished them with mothers mag and wheel polish.

There are still some nicks in the lip but with the sanding and polishing you cant really tell they are there.

Great job. Let us know if they start chipping though.

I can tell you right now that they will. It doesn't take much to mess up the paint.

The chipping won't be THAT noticeable. Also, when it does chip, all you really need to do is sand it smooth in that area and just apply another layer of paint.:thumb:

exactly what i did on my 93 eclipse, didnt have the money to buy black racing rims so i decided to just paint my stock ones and leave the lip chrome and while im driving ppl actually think i have rims. I sanded it down real good befo i painted them and it came out smooth. A nice mod for the broke pocket LOL
