Well I have good news.
The other day I drove my GSX out and had to have it towed back.
What was weird was that the crank would turn over but the cams wouldnt
the timing belt was still intact. Weird huh?
Anyways I got to looking at it today an the timing belt had seperated there were NO teeth on the belt in one spot that was about 2" long so that part was around the crank gear and the it wouldnt catch to turn the cams.
my question is that sence it didnt make any noise when the car broke down whats the chances my valves are still ok?

OK I have this same problem. But one thing first if you were dirving it when this happened the the valves and stuff will be bent and you will have to replace the head. But if it happend like you drove it parked it then came back and wouldn't start themn there probbaly fine. To fix this if the valves are bent and you need a new head you will first need a new or use head that is good, a timing belt, an intake gasket, an exaust gasket, a blance shaft belt, head gasket, water inlet gasket, oil, oil filter, and anit freez. I was told all of this by an expert on DSM's here in town. He races them and all that crazy stuff and had a very nice DSM so I'm thinking he's is right. Now if it broke while it was parked and the valves are not bent then you will just have to replace the timing belt.

well the thing is I was at a stop sign when it happened so I probly need a head and all that jazz. But its hard to find a 90 gsx in a bone yard around here.

You probably won't need a whole new head. Usually only the valves will get damaged. The only way you'll need to replace the whole head is if any bent valves marr up the aluminum. Pull the head to check its condition before you buy a whole new one.

Wait, where's the good new part. :p I'm sorry but I don't see how the valves would be OK in this situation. Pulling the head for a re-build is the easy part, The hard part is finding out why? Did you recently do work to the head? Timing belt? Like installing cams without using the same cam caps from the same head in the exact order as they're labeled?

Yeah Like turbosport said I think it mainly depends alot on how the head looks too. So check that. But yeah new valves are a def.

I have had this happen to a few of my friends cars and I swear to you I tossed a new belt on them and did a cpmpression test all three times they were fine. I have no idea how but everytime so far heads were fineWTF Toss a new belt on it and do a compression test before you rip into it it may be okay still:thumb:

Like already stated, put a belt on and check compression. If it is low, chances are the valves are bent. If that is the case, lots of times, it is cheaper just to bet a head from a boneyard and replace the seals than it is to buy new valves and have yours fixed. Any 90-94 4g63 turbo or non turbo head will work. Just swap your cams into the new head and you will be fine.

well another question is when I pulled the valve cover the valves were closed so if the valve were close when this happened what are the chances that all it needs is the timing set and a new belt

and the reason the belt stripped was that the car had been sitting for 3 years and the belt was cracking and starting to dry rot

Unless the CAMs were completely off the head there is no way that your valves were all closed.

Try car-parts.com . It is a bone yard database .
