i dont know how the owner was with the car but i decided to buy recane to try to clean it, however i just filled my tank and in a 1/4 tank of city driving i got 110 miles. so should i anyways?

Um... units of measure, such as a "1/4 tank" don't mean much. The fuel level gauge isn't accurate whatsoever: that 1/4 tank probably equals something closer to 2/3 tank. Ever notice how you tend to run out of gas more quickly past the 1/2 empty mark?

Cleaning out the combustion chambers is not a bad idea though; it can't ever hurt anything. Get "SeaFoam" from AutoZone; that'll do the job. The instructions on the can are pretty thorough, although, if you get stuck, there have been several threads about it here on Tuners.

Yeah, our gas gauge isn't accurate at all. I was driving home from school, and on the first 1/4 tank(on the gauge) I got 200 miles! I was so amazed I took a pic of it. On the remaining 3/4 of the tank, I got 200 miles LOL.

so how do i know what my mileage is if its inaccurate. is there a low few sensor in the car?

Fill the tank. Divide the miles on the trip by the gallons you put in. Boom, gas mileage aka Miles per gallon

so if you put 12 gallons in your tank, then you drive like 230 miles... you just devide 230 by 12 making it 19mpg?

Pretty much, but you have to make sure your gas tank is empty (or very close to empty) both when you put the 12 gallons in, and afterward.

Here's what I do.

I always fill the tank completely - none of that $10 here, $15 there bullshit. Then I reset the odometer. Next time I stop for gas, I fill it up, divide the miles on the odometer by the number of gallons and voila - instant MPG.

I typically run about 28-30 in town, untuned.

Yeah, thats exactly what I do. I usually get 22 mpg in town because I have a heavy foot and I'm addicted to boost :coy:

hey thanks everybody. all city driving shifting around 3500 and a couple red lines, got me 23 MPG. but is the tank 12 gallons or 17 gallons?

Tank is 16.9 gallons. Low fuel light typically starts fading on and off when 2 gallons remain. Good to know. Since I know I get about 30mpg in town, when the light comes on, I know I can go a good 50 miles before I stop for gas, easily.

Well here is my question then.

If the tank is 16.9 gallons, and we round it off to a lesser number like 16gallons.

And subtract the two gallons that you have when your on E

How come I can never get more than 12.5 gallons in my tank when I fill it up.

16-2= 14gallons of play.

I think the light might come on a little earlier than 2 gallons, and is possibly more like 3. But I dont' really have a way to prove it, nore do I care that much.

My bad. That was a typo. It comes on when you have 3 gallons left in the tank.

~17g tank.
~3g left when the light comes on

I had the same problem with my 95 tsi awd and my 98 esi. No matter how far I got the gas tank empty, I couldnt get a 13 gallon fillup. Yet with my 97 Gs I can do 16 gallons....

I'm thinking maybe the tank needs to have some breathing room in it, for when the car is in motion ect, so it only allows 15.5-16gallons in at max. Just a weired thought.

yeah it filled to 13.3 gallons at E but it got 305 i think out of it.
ask you guys something. does all models have a low fuel light or certain models. cause my coolant light and gas light never shows up at start up

The light is supposed to come on with only 3 gallons prior to empty? Hmm I figured mine was off, it usually comes on after using 11 gallons.

but does the light show at start up or does it show when your low on fuel?

Just low on fuel, I don't think my shows on start-up

Mine likes to fade on and off when I'm low on gas at first, then stays on after I drive longer yet.

Yeah mine too. I usually wait until it is on solid to re-fill, and it is still only 12-13 gallons to fill it.
