Hello guys! I'm not a native english speaker, but I'll do my best. My car is a 1995 GST.

My timing belt broke recently, and almost everything from the camshafts to the pistons broke. Basically I'm gonna have to rebuild the engine, as I decided that it's a good opportunity (or excuse...) for this. So I've been thinking about getting some performance stuff to "clear the path" for my future mods (the car was basically stock before the incident): ~350hp, 16g EVO III, etc. Possibly even a bigger turbo later, GT35R. POSSIBLY.

I'm not thinking about increasing piston bore or valve holes or whatever. Is it needed?

So since I'm getting new pistons, rods, crankshaft (NO CRANKWALKING!), valves, cams, etc. Since I'd haave to change like, everything, I naturally thought about stroking the engine, especially because I heard it increases lower end torque and makes the turbo spool faster. The MAPerformance kit is sounding good to me. Is it a good idea to do this? The car is basically a weekend car (though I could use it a few times during the week) and it will possibly be tracked a few times. Also, for stroking, do you need any fuel management/injection stuff or other supporting mods, like a different balance shaft or something like that?When you buy piston, does it come with the pins and rings?

Also, I'm gonna need new camshafts, and I'm not sure whether to get 264's or 272's. Which one would work best with a stroked motor? I heard they need adjustable camgears to have a decent idle, is that true? Do they need any supporting mods to work correctly? Would they make a stroked motor any better than they would on a stock stroke motor? Any other suggestions for the valvetrain?

Also, I think it's worth it to mention that we have 95 octane gasoline and E100 available here in Brazil, but I don't think I'm going to convert it to Ethanol.

If your block walls are scored your going to have to over bore. Its not a big deal.

As for the cams id go HKS 272 ( they dont need VT modification ). You do not need adjustable cam gears, but making sure you set the HKS's right can make a world of difference. As for would they make a stroked motor better than a stock stroked. Of course.

You might as well go big with the injectors, 1000cc or 1600cc (same price so).

I hope you have engine management ( dsmlink or ems ) because you will need it for the stroker.
(Wideband needed also)

For a turbo an HX35 or 40 would spool quite quick on the 2.3 or 2.4 platform.

Now i have to ask what are your intentions? Weekend Warrior and sometimes track? or DD?

Anyways if your going big with the stroker, might as well go with a new intake/exhaust mani.
I have my fav brands so you can pick yours.

For intake though your going to want a gm maf and maft trans, OR take the MAF out all together and get DSMLink v3 and run speed density.

Dont know if im missing anything.

EDIT: Just saw its for a GST. Your going to need one hell of a tranny and clutch to keep that bad boy from melting the rubber of the tires. An thats a good 4 - 5 grand right there....

I meant if the cam's effects would be better on a stock motor or on a stroked. I think I read somewhere that when your motor is stroked they'd give more power on lower RPMs, and that's good to me. Part of the reason for getting a stroked engine is to have more lower end torque, I don't plan on revving it anywhere over stock redline, 7000 RPM.

Also, I notice that half the people put 264 on the intake and 272 on the exhaust. Why? What's the advantage over 272 or 264 on both? Also, I'm going with HKS for the camshaft brand.

As I said, the car is basically stock. Just a cone air filter and spark plugs/wires, I don't have engine management, nor was I planning on getting it too soon. Is the Apexi SAFC Neo good enough, or does if have to be more sophisticated like those you mentioned?

I don't know much about Holset turbos, I was thinking about a 16G Evo III. I wanted something between 300-350hp, probably 320, but I wanted the car to withstand a lot more. But that's later, I'm gonna keep the stock turbo for now.

I not taking this opportunity make the whole "amusement park" right now, I making the roads that lead to it. I'll make the park later. It's a lot of money already.

The car is supposed be a a fun car to drive in the weekends, with very occasional track use, probably around half a dozen times a year, tops.

I wasn't planning on changing those. Is it needed? It's gonna be a lot of money already, I just wanted to change the stuff that broke and stuff that is a good opportunity to change now, that I was probably gonna change later anyway, since I wanted "bulletproof" 300-350hp.

Like I said, I was planning to keep the stock fuel management unless it's necessary to change it for the cams/stroke kit. Anyway, just a curiosity: what's the problem with the stock MAF that everyone changes it for that GM one?

Well, I'll make a list of what I was planning on doing now and later:

Now:
-Cams, valves, etc. Head stuff, timing belt, as it's all broken, and cam gears if it's good/needed for the camshaft;
-Engine internals: Pistons, rods, crankshaft. Pistons were damaged, I'm taking this opportunity to upgrade the rest. That's why I thought about the stroker kit;
-Headgasket, of course. Suggestions?

Later, for my 300-350hp goal:
-Engine management, I was thinking about the Apexi SAFC Neo;
-16g Evo III, injectors, fuel pump, fmic and everything else needed to support the turbo;
-New intake and exhaust systems.
-New Clutch, flywheel, CV axle (if needed).
-Evo VIII/IX brakes, new wheels, some improvement on the suspension, Quaife diff.
-Probably more stuff that I'm forgetting.

The stroker it self will help with the low end, doing 262 272 helps lower and mid. 272 really is a mid high helper but like i said the stroker it self will do that.

If you do get 1600s i dont think a safc can correct them enought to not run rich with just a 16g.
In the aspect of the turbo though, maybe a hx-35 is alittle more then you need but i wouldnt go 16g with a stroker. Id say at least a 18 or 20g. The 20g on a stroker will spool like a 16g.

Now with the intake an exhaust mani. Forced Performance has a very nice exhaust mani (stock bolt on turbo setup ) for 185. You cant beat that. Just ceramic coat it and your set. For intake mani, you might not need to go aftermarket but i think you will need to port it. I can see a huge restriction problem with a 20g and a stroker.

In retrospect with the stock maf. People go GM maf for less restriction and tuning options. BUT with dsmlink v3 you can go all out speed density and forget a MAF all together ( which is nice ). I suggest a pro tune with SD though. Which can run you 250 - 400 for a decent tune.

In closing i dont think anyone who has gone with DSMlink and has regretted it. An it has endless possibilities ( AEM EMS aside since its 600$ or so more than dsmlink and the tune is a shit ton more )
 
Why not a 16g? Wouldn't I get the power I wanted with it? I like reeally fast spooling! Maybe I could get it to full boost at 3000RPM or less, or a stroker wouldn't help it, only bigger turbos? Anyway, 20g are quite expensive, maybe the 18g if a 16g Evo III can't do it.

Thanks for the suggestions, man! I'll think about the manifolds when I do the rest of the upgrades, or the stock will be too much of a restriction for the stroker and the stock turbo? I just wanted to get the parts needed to get the car running nicely right now. Most of the upgrades are going to be done later, as I mentioned in the previous post.

Also, why exactly is engine management needed for the stroker? Is it needed for the cams alone?
