glow plugs on dsm?

k well i work at autozone. and this guy showed up on a spider. im not sure it ts was a gsx or gst. but im sure he had a turbo on there. now he came asking about ignition glow plugs for his car.
now from my knoledge disels are the only ones that use glow plugs. he asked if we had any aftermarket glow plugs for small engines. we showed him like all the books that we have there of aftermarket stuff but most of those is ofcourse for trucks not so much for lil 4 cylinders. i told him that glow plugs are usually used on disels and not on gas cars. he sayd that its a new thing thats on 4 cylinders and that they make alot of difference.

and i bet they do ignites the fuel much faster and better soo ofcourse ## gona get better fuel milage out of those things...BUT is it posible?

i also told him that he would have to get u know like different coils and stuff since they require much more power and he said he had some stuff in mind but he wanted to be sure if WE carried any glow plugs like that.

i told him about the idividual iginition coil and he said that this was much better that that and stuff.

anyways since i couldt really help him on this topic i gave him this site and he said that he'll be doin some research and stuff. so hopefully he opens an account and tell us all bout it how it works and stuff . (if its possible)

he was kinda old bytheway, like easyly on his 40's. so i dono if he was really sure what he was talkin about .

anyways tell me what u guys think or if u ever herd of such thing as "glow plugs" on a dsm. or just on a 4 cylinder .

Sometimes Nitro Methane engines can run with glow plugs. They rely on the engines compression and the glowing plug to fire the cylinder.
The Nitro is so hard to ignite that it HAS to be compressed in order to ignite properly. similar to diesel.

Im sure he was just confused from being so old...he probably meant spark plugs haha.

I think hes thinking about "pulsar" spark plugs. I saw an add in a magazine about em. They claim more HP and more fuel efficiency by producing 1 million watts of spark.

I think its just a regular spark plug with a cool word on th side. I would stay away from them.

Modern diesel engines generally use direct injection, where the fuel injector nozzle is located in the combustion chamber. The fuel is injected at a very high pressure at a point in time when the piston is just about reaching TDC. Because diesel engines use very high compression ratios, the compressed air inside the cylinder is searing hot and the glow plug basically only helps hold more heat. The fuel is injected into this extreme heat and it immediately detonates from the high temp of the glow plug, exploding and creating high pressure as the piston passes TDC and starts to descend. Glow plugs are only useful with a very high compression engine (usually >15:1) that uses detonation instead of ignition, no matter what fuel is used.

Nice little write up there delta. Usaully your average diesel is running anywhere from 16:1-24:1compression ratio. Yep the diesel fuel is compressed almost into solid form before it detonates and starts the next cycle.Just thought i would thow that in there

Are you sure he was intending to use them in a 4G63 engine? Maybe he just has a small diesel engine at home and was playing around with you.

not many diesel engines even use glow plugs... it isnt even something that is needed to make the engine run as diesel is all compression. Maybe he had a diesel escort, or diesel ranger, or even a VW diesel. something with a 4cyl diesel engine in it.

i asked him if he was runin on a 4g63 or a 420g and he had no idea. i wasnt able to go out and look at it since it was two of us in the store and it was busy. but i have no freakin idea what the hell that old man is trying to do.
and no he looked pretty serious about it.

Filling up behind McS**ts, whoo that's a good one. I think he is a crazy old man, or is doing a 4M diesel motor swap like the galant diesels used to come with. Rather in Japan, most of the Mitsubishi line-up still offers diesel alternatives to their gas motors, and are easily swapped into 4G vehicles. That may just be a farfetched idea though

You can run something like a glow plug on our cars. The talon i had i ran some for my boss, it was on the 420a, they work, very iffy when on a cold start, it lowers your exhaust temps by a bit. I ran them in my 4g63 and it was bad, it started to detonate and i put my plugs back in. You can run them, it works wonders on lawn mowers. I may be little late on this this thread tho.
