Im just wondering are large cams really always needed in higher HP builds?

Or if a set of plain jain kelford or hks 272's will do the job just fine?

kelford 272s and hks 272s are worlds apart in "size". 226 duration at .05" vs. 212 duration at .05" is a bigger difference than hks 272s are over stock. they have more duration at .05" than 280s and some 288s.

The kelfords are "teh high hp cams".

What is the ramp speed of hks 272s ?????? We need a source for that. We have complete profiles for fp cams, but where are the graphs of the hks cams? IOW we need more than your W. :)

There's nothing "plain jane" about the kelfords:p As said for the advertised "272" they have a lot more duration than said hks.
You must always keep in mind that all these cam companies' grinds have different ramp rates, lift and duration. For example BC272 is not same as Kelford 272, and so on.

Thank you for clearing that up , Matt. People do not pay attention, but HKS and Kelford's 272's are worlds apart.. The only thing on Kelford's, that is 272 is advertised duration..:D

regardless of cam brands, smaller cams will need more boost or rpms to make the same peak power at the same rpm as a larger cam in a high horsepower application, and usually will make more power down low.

But as long as you know that hks 272s are smaller than kelford 272s. Kelford 264/260s are larger than hks 272s and fp2s as well. They have 216* duration at .05" lift, whil my fp2x cams have 212* duration and hks have 213* duration.

So for the most part, kelfor 264/260s will work at least similar to fp2s with perhaps even more topend, depending on how they are degreed.

Turbo selection, target rpm range and power gaols are all fators. You can't just look at one

For instance a car with a gt42r made for drag racing isn't going to use the same cam as a 50trim autox car and its not just because of different power levels. The drag car might only use 4k - 9k for drag racing where the autox car might only really use 2.5k - 7.5k. Cams have target rpm ranges as well as flow characteristics for those rpm ranges.

There is this guy, I know. He runs 42R on a car that is Shep's material.. He ran 130 MPH in the 1/8 mile with plain HKS 272's....:hellyeah::hellyeah: If you have some extra $$$ check also JUN cams..

I believe it hell shep ran 9s with 272s but I look at it like the guys that make 500hp with 16gs, its possible but will the average joe do it....probably not. Enter bigger cams

Thanks guys, I ran fp2s on the car last season on a mild setup (stock engine/head), I have a 2.0l ready for the car, I should have the head back soon as well.

I went with the Kelford 272's, which I understand is a decent size cams. I discovered very quickly that there is large differences between '272' cams from different companies once you start looking at the specs of the cam.

The kelfords should meet my goals for the car fairly well, If i went with a BC cam I would have gone with something bigger then their '272'.

You just hear the terms 272, 280 288 etc being thrown around all the time, and unless you know the company that makes the cam it really dosen't give any good info the the cam there actually using ;).

Oh and slippi, you have a PM.
