ok 1st i bought my newest dsm from a friend of a friend.the guy put alot of $$ in it and cought it on fire.he burned the wirring harness out of it and decided to get rid of it.this is my 3rd dsm.ive had a 95 gst with all the free mods + intake exaust.my second was a 92 talon tsi fwd no mods.working on them was fun and ive gotten pretty handy under the hood of dsm.ive even had some friends tow there cars over to the house for repairs and mods.
this newest talon is an awd(ive wanted one soooo bad).the list of mods i know of is as follows.
built 6 bolt.crower rods wiseco pistons, ballance shafts removed bored .20 over. compression test is 175 across the board.
stock head with hks 272 cams
evo III 16g
2g ported manifold w/ egt tap(no egt installed)no money for one
tial 38mm external wastgate
3" turbo back exaust.
sheetmetal intake
denso 680cfm injectors
front mount w / hard pipes
1g bov
walboro 255
safc
now ive pulled the harness from one of my parts cars and rewired the car.(no cel) got that right.cool.now the problems.
all my dsm s have purred like kittens but this one is a monster. i understand the cams will make it idle alot differant.so im adjusting .
my main problems are that the car runs hot.when you drive it for short distances and park it you can hear the overflow bubbling.now ive read alot here and not found anything that helps.head gasket is good?, no smoke.
could the car running lean cause this?the previous owner said he did the math and has the safc set to -30 across the board.(hi lo thrtl).ive also been told by a guy into 240 nissans that it may be a bubble in the head.great, how do i get rid of that?he said that since my overflow came loose and was laying flat on the licp that it was acting like a siphon and when i fixed it and refilled the coolant it traped air in the system.(forgot to mention that about overflow)any help would rock!!!also if anyone has (safe) SAFC settings for simmilar set up i would love to hear them.i dont have enough $ for a wideband or logger,so im just letting the car sit,i cant afford to replace the engine so im being safe.and how the heck did pple tune these cars modified before widebands, data logers, egt, dsm link ect ect....???
like i says most of my experiance is in lightly modded and stock dsms, making them purr is easy.heavilly modded= not easy.HELP.

By bubble he means air in the coolant system. You need to burp the air out. This will cause it to over heat. Also try replacing your thermostat. They're cheap and easy.

On a side note, 272's idle shouldn't be too much different than stock. And you shouldn't be trying to make changes to the fuel system without a wideband. The narrowband is trash and does not provide a good insight as to what's going on in the engine. Set the SAFC at stock until you get a wideband.

if i set the safs to 0 it dies out at iddle.
i didnt make any of the modds i just bought it that way.for $.1900.00. the friend found out theyre having a baby and after the lil fire,he couldnt put more $$ into it.so i basically stole it from him.LOL...
anyway,im going to try to borrow a wideband from a local tunershop soon.im just more concerned with getting it driveable soon.how or what should i use to "burp" the system?
the cams wont make it sit and iddle like a grag car???thats what im getting right now.thumpa,thumpa.....thumpa..thumpa.thumpa. to me it seems more out of adjustment with the timing , or firing order,or maybe the tps maybe.but it still sounds pretty cool , just not sure if its supposed to be idling like that.wish i could find a way to post a vid.you have 272 cams brute???yours iddle ok?the guy was making it a drag car and deleted alot of stuff,i had to put back.it wouldnt start after it warmed up,fixed that from here.was vaporlocking.now this.oh and the thermostat is now i did that 1st.

I had a similar setup on my car and your settings for your afc seem a little low. How many pounds of boost are you running? You might want to increase your fuel at least 3-5 percent. This will stop it from leaning out, which is going to cause it to get hot. Also the idle you are describing is exactly what cams sound like on a car without a CAT and a 3' exhaust. Its mean aint it? I love it to death on my car. Also you are def going to need to invest in a really nice radiator if you plan on running these cars hard. A fluidyne radiator is worth the money when you compare them to stock ones.
Lets us know how this is all working out for you and good luck.

i dont have any way of upping the fuel pressure right nnow ..i need sooo many more parts to get it tuned right.i like the sound but its still odd to me.id love a fluidine but dont have the $$ for one right now.im running 14lbs of boost straight off the wastegate.no mbc yet.im so screwed on this. i have all the basic stuff and now need the tools to get it running safe.any ideas how much hp this set up should put down at 18-22 lbs on race gas???the honda guys say im only in the 250 range max at 22 lbs 270 hp???

He ment add a few percent on your SAFC, not the fuel pressure. You stated that you had a SAFC set to -30 across the board, increase it mabey -25 to be safe. The Honda guys you are talking about are wrong, that turbo flows enogh air for I think 380HP Max, but alot of people have made 300hp or more at the wheels on a EVO 3 Turbo and around 20 lbs. of boost. You have cams and a SMIM so you should have no problem making 300AWHP or more. You should be able to tune 18-22 lbs on pump gas, just watch for knock and back down when it presents itself. With race gas you should tune it for 28lbs or what ever the highest you turbo will make and the engine will refrain from knock. The 300AWHP should be easy on pump gas. Those Honda guys just wish they made that kind of power, that is why they are talking shit.

How big is the FMIC? It could be simply blocking the air going to the radiator and causing the overheating problems. If thats the case you fab up an air dam out of some Home Depot stuff and route the air where it's needed. As far as the rest of the car goes I would wait to adjust anything! You really have no way of knowing what the engine is doing. If it were mine I would let it sit until I at least had a logger and wouldn't pound on it until I had a AFPR. How many mile are on the engine? If it hasn't been broken in properly yet then the overheating could cause a more serious problem and drastically shorten the engines life.

according to the 1st owner who had the engine built it has been 7 mo and has been driven verry little becouse he set the wiring harness on fire.he tried to cut and tape it back togeather but it was throwing like 15 cel codes he said.after my rewire it has zero cel.ill set the safc to -25 and see how it dose when i get ahold of a wideband.im NOT driving the car for the overheating problem, and will not untill i figure it out.i dont have the $$ to buy and replace the internals and this oppertunity for me to have a fast dsm wont happen for awhile. and the innercooler ..,um,,, not sure on the dementions but it goes from fog light to foglight and is about 12-14 inches tall and 3-4 inches thick.where can i get directions for the airdams????

ok i posted a help thread in the noobie forum awhile ago and i got alot of help.now for my results.
i performed a leakdown test and found that my head gasket was good and so were the valves(awesome)
next i went on to the next sugestion and burped the system.or purged it from any air....car still running in the low 200s.
next i search showed that my fmic might be too big an obstruction.so i got one of those lil smoke bombs out from the 4th of july light it about 16-18 in from the innercooler with the car running at idle, and the fan on.after the smoke cleared i opened the hood.No smoke onder the hood:( next i searched ways to vent the hood or route air into the radiator.found plenty of good ideas.i went out the the garage with the intention of cutting some scrap aluminun up to make deflectors to move more air.
then it dawned on me:coy: what about the little :talon: emblem plate that sits between the headlights????1g only. i removed the 2 screws holding mine in and there was the radiator!!!!!yeah!!!so another smoke test.
sure enough the 16" slim fan was easly pulling smoke into the radiator and engine bay. now the temps at idle and driving stay at 185-190 during idle and about the same under boost.
it looks a bit funny like a sexy lady missing a tooth but ill fix that by cutting out the center of the emblem plate and adding mesh to it.
id like to thank everybody who gave me the imput and also everyone else who posted there problems and solutions for overheating.
