Hello everyone. New to DSM, not new to cars. Im actually more of an LS1 kind of guy. But, after losing my 04 GTO, and always being jealous of AWD launches, I decided to try something new.

The key things that are new to me in a DSM, is

1.) Turbo - I havent really dealt much, only with superchargers.
2.) DOHC - Entirely new thing to me, I'm used to OHV
3.) AWD - Also a relatively new system, I understand how it works, Just havent messed with it much.

I intend on building the car for the same thing i used the GTO for, racing in the E.T.s at the local dragstrip.

First thing first, I understand mods work differently for different motors. Headswaps, and cams wake an LS1/LT1 up. How does that work for these? Poking around on the site, it seems almost that the stock cams are fine, until you upgrade injectors?

Are there any things that are "common issues" with these cars for me to iron out right away? I see something about deleting the balance shafts? Any other tips, or anything all you can point out would be much appreciated. As far as mods go, the companies seem to be different then what i would get for the GTO. Money isnt too much of a concern (wiithin reason). And i prefer only getting great quality items.

Thanks in advance!

Check the upgrade path replace anything you think of that's not done general stuff belts, timing forth once you get it youll find out you need a lot of things being a 20 year old car that goes, for any older vehicle.

At this current time, the front main seal, and timing belt, plus all pulleys are being replaced.

I intend on simply rebuilding the internals, not knowing too much on the history of the car. I figure, while building the internals, prepare it for the more heavy mods i will be putting in it during the next year. Im talking valvetrain, mostly. I was trained to build valvetrains and supporting mods prior to any sort of boost upgrades. (For obvious reasons)

The turbo on there right now says "TD05H" Which, from what I understand is a 16g. But this is where i get confused. How can i tell the difference if its a Small 16g, big 16g, or evo III 16g?

What are some respected companies for rods, springs, etc for dsms? For the GTO it was Chromely and Comp Cams. Same thing with these?

Here's the best book I've ever seen on upgrades and how to's with pictures (has all the manufacturers names of parts upgrades with pics): "Mitsubishi & Diamond Star Performance Tuning" by Keith Buglewicz (ISBN: 978-1-55788-496-1).

After looking at reviews on that book, and another book, I decided to get a different book. It had 19 reviews, 18 of them were 5 stars. With a lot of good things to say. The one you linked, most were 3 or 4 star reviews. I'll let you know when it comes in.

Just your preventive maintenance is what id reccomend, maybe hoses that are torn, bolts, sensors, etc. In my honest opinion, they are freaking touchy and tempermental, but will treat you right if worked on properly. If you got the how to build high performance 4g63t engines from Road Race Engineering, that is an awesome book man. Welcome to the comunity I think you'll be surprised at the potential of this platform. Mine gav me hell at first but once things got figured out she started making life a bit funner but I still get the occasional headache here and there.

How to Build Max-Performance Mitsubishi 4g63t Engines by Robert Bowen and Robert Garcia is a good book also.
