I have done some research and cant find what I'm lookin for.

I have a 2.4l block and I'm tryin to install my front plate and water pump. I cant find a gasket for the front plate and it will be next week before they could get me a water pump gasket. Whats the thoughts about using rtv on the front plate and on the water pump? Also grey or black? I'm thinkin grey.

yea bro i would make my own gasket as well then use the best RTV you can find...

Cool thank. I didn't know you could get a gasket paper. I knew about the roll of cork but don't like cork gaskets.

Just my luck. 2 to 3 days to come in. Wont be able to order it till Monday.

I wouldnt trust it to just rtv. Just call Advance Auto Parts or w/e and get them to order it. The ones here dont charge you until you pickup the part. Usually takes 1-3 days to get in any item.

I would get the gasket. I would not use rtv at all. I like the cooper spray adhesive. If you think about it when you take any part off that motor from the factory they dont use rtv. They just use the gasket. I would clean all surfaces with lacquer thinner or brake cleaner and then assemble. That's wear i like the copper spray because it doesn't ooze out everywhere and it gives a very thin layer. If you use rtv you want the thinnest layer possible. That's just my thought. I used the copper spray on my valve cover and it worked great and you cant tell when looking at my motor. Rtv is not meant to be a gasket.

i'd go for the gasket maker, that way you always have some whenever you'll need a gasket again. i use black rtv with the gasket. haven't had any problems

Ill pick up a set of copper gasket spray this week as well as some gasket maker. Ill order the water pump gasket. Ordering the rings this week too.

why isn't it meant to be a gasket? isn't it a "gasket maker"? i think the OP should use an actual gasket for the front case/water pump. the only gasket i made using rtv is on my oil pan.

RTV makes a good sealant, every rebuilt engine I've seen from shops such as Jay Racing, etc, has RTV between the oil pan and the engine block, and that area sees some pretty hot temps, much like the front case area would. But if I'm not mistaken, our engines came from the factory with RTV as a gasket for the oil pan. I look at it like this, it probably wouldn't hurt to use RTV for the front case/water pump, but I would still use the actual gasket made for the part. But if you're going to use it, try to be stingy (for lack of a better word), using roughly no more than a 1/8 bead and let it sit for a while until it's firmer, that way when you compress the gasket and tighten it down you won't have all the crap sticking out and getting everywhere. That's just what I'd do, but how I'd do it could very well be wrong. And I think there are only certain areas that i would use copper spray (metal head gasket, turbo manifold>head gasket, turbo>turbo manifold gasket, o2 housing gasket) maybe one or two others.

You are right our oil pans do come with rtv from the factory. I had forgot about that. I used a gasket when i redid mine but wondered if i should have used rtv.

I plan on using rtv on the oil pan i haven't ever had good luck with a gasket not leaking on these or a honda. As for the water pump in the past with all other motors i have done rtv. But for less than $2 im ordering a gasket. Dont want to have to pull everything back apart if it leaks. My main wonder was the engine cover/oil pump. Im going to call Rock Auto and make sure they have it in stock tomorrow and see when i can have it.
