Gas tank vent or sealed?

To start, all i smell is gas when im driving. I have a crack on top of my current tank. I got another tank with no cracks. The tank has 2 nipples, 1 for the filler pipe and the other for some sort of vent i believe. My filler pipe had a bunch of other things on it (lines, big canister, ect) I cut it all off because they were rusting. So i have JUST the filler pipe (basically running a metal pipe from gas cover to tank with nothing attatched). I want to close the other port off since i no longer need it. This would leave me with just the evap hose as a vent (not running evap so it will vent right at the tank). Is this enough? My real question is can i block off the other port next to where the filler hose goes into? I hope you guys understand my question.

I cannot find any info on this and my tank is coming out tommorrow. I need to know what ports can be blocked off before i put the new tank in.

You need at least the 2 hoses. There should be one that runs along side your filler neck. It lets the air out of the tank while you fill it. You may have some issues filling the tank without it.

If you need a new filler neck, call these guys. They will make sure you get the right one.

I got one from them and it's working great. They have a heavy epoxy dip on the outside to keep them from rusting again.

I haven't seen what these tanks look like but in theory you'd want the filler neck and a spare port available to vent the excessive positive pressure in the tank, once the fuel heats up. Then you want a valve to allow air to replace the fuel as the level drops.

Then a vent for the filler neck.

Then the fuel pump assembly takes care of fuel feed, and return so that's already taken care of.

To be honest, i really do not mind any issues pumping gas. I am more worried about the fuel pump not being able to pump fuel because there is no air getting in. do you think if i have only the filler neck ( and block off the other nipple) and leave just the evap line vented i should be fine?

You're best bet is to get a filler neck with two tubes.

On another note.. depending on your year car (97+), if you cut off all the million other tubes involved in the filler neck, those are all emissions stuff. Depending on your state (inspections, etc..) this could cause you a problem with having removed them. ALSO, depending on your year car, there are a couple emissions related sensors wired in on the back of your fuel tank, so you MIGHT get a CEL because of these.

Of course that all depends on what ECU you're running, etc..

No worries about emissions since i can pass without them. Is it really that bad when pumping gas and is there any tricks? Im not worried about going slow and it taking a little while.
