Does anyone know how to set timing on a galant vr-4/cyclone gt engine. I have a book for the eclipse but the timing setup is different and I just wanted to make sure there wasn't any secrets compared to other engines. What I was going to do was pull the first spark plug and put a piece of steel pole down in the spark plug hole and turn the crank until the pole starts to go down and find top dead center for cylinder 1 that way. I just wanted to see if anyone else had any suggestions other than this. What confuses me is that the harmonic balancer has 2 timing cuts but only 1 timing mark on the cover that I can find. Any help would be appreciated.

I just put a GVR4 motor in mine and it was exactly as the book described. I did however do what you mentioned to check TDC on 1. I used a screw driver. But otherwise, it's just as the book describes. And make sure you counter the exhaust cam 1 degree forward of the intake when you're locking the gears because when you release them it always pops about 3/4 to a full tooth back. Took me 7 times before I realized what was happening. Good luck.

Also, about the 2 cuts. I'm not sure about that. You have to find whichever is the right one and which one is just wrong. All my marks lined up except for my oil pump/balancer shaft which was about 1/2 tooth off, but it was still clocked so that it would always spin back towards the timing mark instead of away from when it was moved.

In my book it shows 2 timing marks down on the harmonic balancer. I just cant seem to find the other mark on the other gear down there. Btw, off topic, did yours come with a big 16g turbo?

On the crank? I had a problem finding one of the markings to line mine up until I realize that the top gear comes off the crank. This was my first motorswap and first timing job and it took me a few hours to realize that the top cog (the one that actually provides the base for the timing belt) must be removed in order to see the smaller cog behind it.

The cog behind the actual timing belt gear is the one that runs to the harmonic balancer that is on the left side of the motor (if you're looking at the motor from the driver side tire well). Both that small cog and the balance shaft to the upper left have timing marks. You'll have to pull the big one off first to see this, though, and all that holds it on is the center nut. You'll have to use an impact wrench to get it off, but it's not that bad.

Once you get that larger gear off, you should see the smaller behind it which holds the balance shaft belt and has the timing mark for making sure the crank is where it's supposed to be.

Does that help at all?

And No, mine did not come with the big16g. It shouldn't make a difference. The only different thing on those big turbo equipped engine should've been the turbo and injectors. Other than that, the motors are still the same.

Thanks, I guess I'm gonna be pulling off all the covers again and take a look. The question about the turbo was me just being curios. Mine came with a big 16g and the EVO III manifold but I bought the car w/the motor already swapped in and what not so he probably did it.
