The guy i just bought my car from recently experienced the flawed transfer case. He locked the wheels up when he was driving one time, nothing bad happened but it shot the transfer case and the shaft.

So for the past however long its been hes been driving without it in, in this case the car has ZERO low end power in first and second gears, just sits there and revs in first gear. Its basically FWD without the transfer case, anyway i was just wondering if thats a really stupid thing to do or what? does that hurt anything ont he car like the tranny or the differential in the back?

I have a used transfer case sitting in my gargae and today i recieved the transfer shaft. I'm not sure exactly how to install it, but the guy who sold me the car left a grip of tools in the back saying that these are needed to do the installation. Me and my friend could figure it out tommorrow, but i just thought i would run it by u guys and see what u thought about it.

Anyway how does it work? Like transmission, then the transfer shaft that i just recieved, to the transfer case, then does it go to a driveshaft? then to the rear differential?

Just found out last night my 92 GSX was made in Febuary :thumb: great news, 6-bolt motor :)

eeeeek someone responde, if u dont know dont just skip past it tell me that ur not sure and i will move this to a different forum.

ahhhhhhhhh

i guess i'll repost this in advanced engine forum section, if any of u know anything about this though feel free to post up, cause i'm a little puzzled by the awd on my car.

Transfer cases don't necessarily work like a transmission. Just look in a repair manual for pictures of how it's geared.

The transfer case is easy to take out, and no it's not good to drive with a bad transfer case. I've read other posts around here with knowledeable users saying it will ruin your center differential (the one that differentiates power to the transfer case and the front wheels.)

To get it off, just drain the transfer case fluid (if there is any ...), unbolt the downpipe from the O2 housing, unbolt the hanger for the downpipe, it's a bit further back and looks like an oval. Then unbolt the 5 bolts that hold the transfer case in (while you either move the downpipe out of the way or remove it completely by unbolting it from the catalytic convertor.) Now, here's a VERY smart thing to do ... GET a jack and put it underneath the transfer case.

With the jack underneath, put it up to the transfer case's height, and then slip the case off the splined shaft. Let the jack catch the transfer case. Lower the jack down and pull on the transfer case to get the driveshaft out. The shaft should come out relatively easy.

It's not hard to do, but you should buy a service manual so you don't accidently take out the wrong bolts :p. In fact, I get to do it tommorow so I can take out my transmission! Be known that you don't really need a jack for getting it off, I didn't when I first took it off. But trust me, after having a transfer case fall on your face, you don't want to take chances. They don't make your face feel good.

Oh, and don't be cheap like me and not replace your transfer case oil seal that goes where the driveshaft comes out. It'll be replaced when I take my transfer case off now, even though it didn't leak when I didn't replace it.

thanks for the advice aikouka i really appreciate ur post, although u sort of misunderstood my dilema.

The car in its state as of right now is there is NO tranfer case, NO transfer shaft, and as far as i know NO drivetshaft. The car is basically running FWD right now.

I'm just wondering is that wise? to drive an AWD made car without the AWD parts in it?
Like i said the transmission is obviously not made for this because the low end power in first and second gear is just ridiculously low. When u take off in first the car barely moves, just revs when u give it more gas, 2nd gear it starts to pick up a little bit, but low second gear its still weak.

Also its not made this way cause i've done a few "drop the clutch" actions and its had like zero effect. I dropped the clutch for about 3k rpm and i can feel it catch really good, its a new clutch so its not that, but when it catches the car just doesn't have any power to peel out or anything like that.

I'm just trying to understand what exactly the car is going through when there is NO transfer case and transfer shaft installed on it.
