I feel pretty stupid because i have been doing all this looking all over the internet to understand the stand alone systems and replacing your injectors. If i understand correctly you need a programmable unit to control your air/fuel ratio depending on the boost from your turbo? and megasquirt ms and ecu are diffrent or do you exchange one another? to run your programs through it you need to run your obd adapter through a computer to tune it or do you have a device that runs the system that is connected. and also is wideband made for tunning all that stuff or what i am so lost.

First a wideband is a tuning tool. It just tells you your a/f ratio. It is very desired when tuning.

As for tuning. You have a 420a which I haven't really messed with but know a little about. Some tuning devices work with you ecu, or trick your ecu, to get the desired results. These are "piggy back" systems. The only thing for the 420a I can think of that would remotely be like this would be a fmu.

Now some tuning solutions completely replace the ecu, these are standalone engine management systems. Not sure if the aem ems is made for the 420a, but I know the most commonly used standalone for the 420a is mega squirt. There are many different versions etc to ms and I do not know nearly enough to go about telling about that.

The only other tuning solution I've heard of for the 420a is portfueler, but once again I know nothing about this.

Good luck with whatever you decide and research is your best friend. I'm sure there will be some 420a guys in here that can give you much more insight than I can.

OP the megasquirt can be set up to replace you stock ecu all together or you can use it as a piggyback system to control only the fuel or only the spark. It's pretty much up to you with how much you want the megasquirt to do. Also with MS it uses a USB cable to go into ## laptop. I use tunerstudio and have my MS set up to control everything.

Research is your best friend!!

Heres the deal i have my motor torn apart downstairs, and i want to build everything up right because the previous owner pretty much just slapped something together said it was the hottest thing on the market and sold it to me for 2gs i blew the motor and now im rebuilding it. He did put some vortex fuel regulator system in it and he said that i had 450cc injectors which i thought were stock injectors but im not sure... but if i want to upgrade my injectors and have my car idle at 900 rmps when my build is done i need.... megasquirt standalone system (takes out my whole factory ecu?) and wideband gauge? and anything else? and changing the ecu is like changing a factory stereo our for a aftermarket stereo??

No there is no plug and play for the megasquirt. You have to splice it into the factory harness. MS is the way to go over an FMU. You have alot more control over the engine than just raising the hell out of the fuel pressure.

You need to do some searching through the megasquirt megamanual and read up on it.

Also it doesn't have to be stand alone. As I said before you can use it as a piggy back system and have it control just the fuel if you want. Or you could wire it all up to be stand alone.

DIYautotune has kits you can buy or symtech labs has fully configured units that you just wire in and tune.

Hi! I will sound very stupid be then how would I learn...I was planning on turboing a 420a, I was going to use a 12:1 FMU for 8 psi of boost with stock injectors... do I also need a megasquirt or other type of fuel management? Sorry if it was already discussed in a post, I've search but didn't find anything...I did however find the How to build a 420a stage 2 turbo kit for under $1000 and doesn't mention any expensive Fuel management systems...

Thanks for your help...

Yes you will keep the stock injectors. With the 12:1 and bigger injectors you will definitely being dumping to much fuel. But have you know running a 12:1 FMU setup is just a band aid. It's not a matter of if, its a matter of when your engine will fail. That is why people with a 420a go with the portfueler or MS.

Thanks so much for your help...I suppose I will spend more on a MS and injectors for now, run 5 psi and buy the intercooler later...
