Unlike the four-wheel-drive version in the Sony PlayStation Gran Turismo game, the real FTO puts its power through the front wheels - and they can't cope. Accelerate hard and the steering wheel writhes in your hands as the tyres struggle to translate the power into forward motion.

I love being right. FTO is front wheel drive (in the game). The GTO is AWD. Sorry. But I won't quit when I know I'm right.

The FTO was a car intended solely for the Japanese market, but a lot have been imported to the UK.
Despite this, the FTO has become one of the most popular import cars in the UK. The number of them sold here must be making Mitsubishi question why they did not start to sell it here officially sooner and in greater quantity than they did (just a few cars around 1999-2002 sold through the Ralliart division).
The FTO was launced in 1994 and won the Japanese Car of the Year title. To celebrate this a special edition car was released featuring Dandelion Yellow paintwork and "Car of the Year" badges.
A revision was made in 1997/98. This consisted of a facelift to the front end and some equipment changes.
Between 1995 and 2000 there were 16,500 FTOs made.
