Front license plate

Just curious to hear how you guys are plating the license plate in the front. My eclipse doesn't have the holes for the license plates and i dont want to drill and holes in the front bumper so whatre some ways around this?

There are a bunch of good threads on this topic that I have read over the years. If you use the "search the site using google" feature and search "front license plate mounting" you should find some really good ideas.

We don't require front plates here, so I am not of much help myself as I don't have one.

My fog lights rusted out. so I picked the better bracket and welded a steel stick to it (hacked off the light part) then welded some angle iron to that, drilled holes bolted plate on. Result is my avatar.

Say F it and ran no front license plate. Havent gotten a ticket or pulled over yet and the cops in my town are dicks! We got a letter saying police activity would be increasing in my neighborhood so I threw it up in the windshield.

Not a good idea to not run a front license plate. Especially if you dont have the $ to pay the ticket. Just my 2c.

Ive done a lot of looking around on the subject and so far this is the cleanest. Excuse the major lack of the car washing activity, I rolled it out the garage for a pic, been slowly working on it for some time.

Mostly because it's illegal in many places, including Ontario. And I'm not sure aboot you, but I'm not aboot to give the Mounties another reason to pull me over.

I also put mine inside of the windshield on the passengers side, haven't gotten pulled over yet and alot seem to do that here.

I always put it in the windshield. I got rubber grommets in the top bolt holes so it doesn't vibrate against the glass. The only time any cop has complained about it was when I lived in NY for a year. But I still left it there. Never got a ticket though.

I haven't had one in probably 9 years on the last three cars I've owned, and I've never been called out on it. I've been pulled over for speeding, burnt out lights tail lights, and "looking susupicious" but never "no front plate" My GTI currently has one on, but that's only because I took a cross country road trip a couple weeks ago and didn't want to give a cop any reason to pull me over.

side note: I know more people who have been pulled over for having a front plate in the windshield than I know for not having a front plate at all. Since in many states, it's illegal to have it in the window vs the "proper height and location"

I didn't want to drill holes either. I don't have a fmic so I decided to zip tie it in the bumper opening temporarily. I decided I wanted something more permanent so I grabbed some long bolts, not sure how long, and stuck them down through two predrilled holes in the crash bar. Then I bolted on a piece of angle iron, and bolted the plate on that with a metal frame I got from advance for extra stability. I run under 200* f most of the time. The only time it gets hotter is boosting up long hills on the interstate in 5th.

Now when I get a fmic, then I will probably use the evo x bracket or something similar, but for now, this works great!

On my 2g I used a relocator for ebay, move it to the side far enough but not too far to block my fog light.

on my 1g i said f it, no plate the bumper is so small surface area, its an old car, register it as a classic in a few years , lucky I haven't had trouble over it, just a warning once.

I have received two tickets from not having the front plate mounted on the front bumper. First in my gsx, then in my spyder. In both cases I had the plate in the windshield. The last cop was a di** and totally went out of his way to pull me over. Now they both have the front plates on the bumper, I just drilled four small holes in the bumper over the passenger fog light and used two black zip ties to hold the plate on. My spyder is black so you don't even notice the zip ties.

Did you know that putting a plate there in front like that is totally blocking any air flow from going through the FMIC and radiator at higher speeds?

..and your comment above definitely proves this plate placement is the wrong idea to have.

I used the stock license plate and bolted to the bumper support, I molded the plate bracket and it came up nice, It doesn't block the air at all.

What a useless post, it's like you're bored and like to point out the obvious. I don't mean to start anything but really.

He doesn't have a FMIC. And for reference I ran my plate the same way with a large FMIC and bent up condenser. I'll admit I had the occasional temperature spike on big inclines in Phoenix and wanted to haul ass for fun (long trip) but for the most part it was fine.

But I didn't like the simple screws and wanted something more factory/clean looking and whamo- Evo X mod.

My front plate has been held on with zip ties for 3+ years with no problems. I have even bumped snow drifts in the winter drifting and it is solid! You can see where It's mounted in my avatar. Does not block air from fmic. Yes I know OP doesn't have a fmic but just sayin.

I too thought this was a horrible place to mount it when I first put it on. I figured at high speeds, air would hit it and create a wall, and I'm sure it does. But, it works for me, and I'm sticking by it. I've driven it like this over two years and never had any overheating problems. In town temps are like 195ish and high speed temps are around 200-205ish. Not bad for an air dam in the front bumper.

Now if I had a fmic, then I would NOT place the plate there. It totally defeats the purpose of an aftermarket part. Like I said, I may go with an evo x plate holder or maybe dream something up that comes from the bottom of the bumper.

The reason I made this post is that I did experience overheating due to my plate in direct placement of the airflow to the radiator.

This is with another DSM that I had prior to my Laser when this happened and I do a lot of freeway driving.

I'm like some of you guys: Got this one 1G DSM that didn't have the factory mounting plate that bolts up underneath the bumper frame. Thus, I took the plate and mounted in the middle of the intake as like the one user has his mounted in the picture.

Shortly after I did this, I was experiencing heating problems and did the obvious with changeout of the T-stat, cap, boiled out the radiator and similar - all with no luck curing my overheating problem, esp on the freeway, for around town, there was no overheating issues .. until one night on the way home from a long distance work, it hit me since I've studied aerodynamics and flying..... :

The danged plate was my problem with it acting like an air dam pushing the air to the sides and not letting air go through the radiator.

I immediately pulled over, went to the back in my toolbox, grabbed a screwdriver and removed the plate. Drove off and temp gauge suddenly behaved and was reading normal temperature. Overheating was cured ! System ran great since then on my freeway travels. I spent all that money for some thing that wasn't broken.

Next day, went to a yard and snagged a mounting plate from a busted up DSM and learned a lesson over this.

That's my story on my experience with plates mounted in the forward air stream.
