Long story short: I bought the shell, then bought the engine, I am now putting the engine in my car. I have never put a 4G63 into a DSM before.

Okie, so, I got 3 of the 4 mounts done. I took a rear engine mount bracket off of a sohc galant, which may be causeing this problem. However, if the rear engine mount bracket was the wrong length, I wouldn't have been able to get the tranny mount or the bigger, wrap-around mount in place and bolted up, like I did. So I am thinking that, since I got this engine from an importer, and was obviously tampered with (13g turbo and flywheel attached, along with a "tuned by AMG" spark plug cover), that maybe the front bracket is the wrong one. Maybe someone had this engine in thier mirage, or colt, and the front bracket is shorter on those cars? Any help would be great. Thanks.

Sorry for the poor quality, these were taken with a cell phone.

these are the best shots I have of the front mount, maybe someone can eye it and tell me if it looks to be the right shape/size/length/whatever:

Is the motor from a AWD or FWD car? The mounts are different for the two. I ran into a similiar problem when installing my 4g63T into my GGSX. Fitted a motor from a FWD car into an AWD shell.

I'm trying to remember all the details but here what I recall. My storage unit is closed, otherwise I could run over and verify this. But to the best of my memory....

AWD mounts.

Rear bracket is shorter.
Front bracket is longer.
Lower transmount is taller (ie the trans is lower in the engine bay)

FWD mounts
Inverse of above

The rear cross-member mounted engine mount is identical to the FWD version, it's just setting in a slightly different spot on the crossmember. Thus the difference the longer/shorter engine brackets. You'll also notice the front FWD mount is closer to the engine than an AWD one.

I'll take a look again tommarrow.

Anyone have CAPS? Can someone list the AWD/FWD group codes for the mounts and brackets? You'll notice the group code stamped in the bracket. If someone can identify the group code, I could post pics of them side by side and label them to give everone an idea. (I'd look up the group codes myself, but I don't have CAPS on CD.... it's on microfiche and I'm won't be to work until Monday to take a look.)

Would I be ok with a FWD rear bracket, and a AWD front bracket? How much longer is the fron bracket off of a AWD car? I don't know what the engine came out of, it was sent to me with no tranny. If it came out of a FWD car, does that mean my flywheel is the wrong one as well? How would I know? I already have the tranny mounted and everything...

The left and right mounts are mounted and bolted, giving very little leverage to the engine moving foward or backward, so I am thinking the difference can't be very much.

I tried to mix and match and it didn't work. Unless it's something unique to the Galants, I'd say no it won't work.

Do you have a trans bolted to the engine? AWD or FWD? The silver backing plate you show on the back of the motor... did it come on it? Do the starter bolt holes in that plate and the trans match? If they don't you have some parts to change. (backing plate, flywheel)

I'm guessing you have an AWD shell w/trans you mounted it in.?

No I bought the trans, shell, and engine all seperately.

Yes that plate is the one that came with the engine, but I cleaned it up a little, yes the starter bolted up to my AWD tranny. Is it different than a FWD car would have?

This is a pic I took the day I got it:

So I have to find an AWD rear bracket? It doesn't seem to me like the engine would move foward any more bacause of the side mounts.

Shell? AWD?

FWD Turbo differs by a few MM to account for the larger diameter. Flywheel. What flywheel did you use?

The mounts are actually in different postions, thus the reason for a different bracket length.

>Shell? AWD?

Yep.

I had the flywheel that came on the engine reserfaced and I threw it on. I am assuming it is AWD because my AWD tranny matched up perfect to the metal plate.

>The engine....... I noticed the red valve cover. JDM motor?

Yep.

Ok so my conclusion is that I need a AWD rear bracket and I should be good....? This doesn't make sense, because That means it will push the engine foward more, and that doesn't seem right. It seems like that would be putting a lot of pressure on the left and right mounts. Unless, by me having a fwd rear mount, it is putting a lot of pressure on the left and right mounts as it is. It did take me and a couple friends 3 hours to get it in... Should the mounts all line up really easy or do you have to force it a little?

AWD car. AWD trans. Engine bolts up fine, thus I'd take it you have a motor from an AWD car. However it's JDM. Which leads me to something I didn't think of. The JDM engines typically come from Galants. Your's was obiously AWD. However, maybe there are differences in the location of the front suspension crossmember and the front crossmember that is below the radiator on the Galants? Which in turn puts the mount locations in different postions, making it neccessary for different length engine brackets.

My experience with this stemmed from putting in a FWD 4G63T in my AWD Galant GSX. Possibly an opposite of your situation. I've got a galant and a DSM engine. You, a DSM shell and galant motor. I know in my case I had to use all the engine brackets off the NT 4G63 that was in the car. I figured it was because it was an AWD vs FWD difference.

On another note, I swapped the entire front and rear suspension modules to update the car to 5 bolt hubs w/o ABS. So, the modules are interchangeable, but overall, the crossmember mounted mounts must be in a different location on the Galant AWD vs DSM AWD.

Interesting situation. I'll need to look into this.

See note above. Both front and rear differ an equal amount that it'll line up and be right.

I speculate that you need DSM AWD front/rear brackets. You have Galant versions on your motor now, and it would appear that's where the difference lies.

For referance:

Take a look at your front/rear brackets and write down the numbers stamped on the sides. It's a group code/part#. Post it here.

I'll look at those I have and we'll compare. I won't be able to get mine until tommarrow.

Alright, I will hunt out DSM AWD front and rear brackets on the trader and I'll post how it goes when i install them. Thanks morphius, you've been a lot of help!

I know there are numbers stamped on the rear bracket I have, I don't know about the rest, although I haven't looked. Do you want to know the numbers off of all of them, or just the front and rear? I'll try to get the numbers tomorrow, my car is 45 minutes away at my grandparents house (huge garage, unlimited tools :D). I do plan on going there tmorrow though.

Front and rear is good.

Ok, I got the numbers today. The front says "844", the rear says "193". And for kicks the tranny mount says "22-H". Can anyone please cross-check these numbers?

UPDATE: The front is not the right AWD DSM mount, I checked the numbers on my buddies 93 GSX, and it doesn't match... however the left one does.
