Found a GSX... Is this a good deal?

A friend of mine is considering getting into the whole DSM scene. He found a 1998 gsx with 80k miles on it today and was wondering if the 11,999 the dealer was asking was a reasonable price to pay. I looked at the car with him and it appears to be very clean on the outside, as well as the engine. The dealer had papers documenting a transmission that was fixed/replaced under warranty due to not staying in gear when it had 30k. Also, I noticed that the clutch when i rested my foot on it would drop down about an inch or so without any additional pressure being applied. This was odd because my NT never did this. The leather interior has experienced the usual wear and we both think that we MIGHT be able to get him down to 11.5k. He had 11k with him to spend but the dealer was simply unable to budge. Do you all think that this is a reasonable price to pay for a 2g GSX? It was, in my opinion, nice, but not that nice. Thanks for your input.

Edit: He didn't even let us test drive the car if we didn't agree to the price before hand.

IMHO that is too much.

Here is how i read it.

busted the tranny dogging the car.
clutch is messed up and misadjusted (car is not maintained well)
won't let you drive it (TOTAL phooking bs...run away that is crap).

Agreed. I was pretty much staying on that horse until the no-test-drive came up, although the $500 no-budge was starting to toss me.

He can screw himself. They aren't that damned hard to find. Just stay patient.

Hmmm just starting out a 1g wouldnt be such a bad idea and with the money hes going to spend on a 2g he could have a decent (hot) running 1g. (if u dont mind the looks and old fash.)

Sounds like the car had been abused.

Either the Slave or Master cylinder is failing

11K is too high in my opinion anyway, if you want a 2nd gen just get a 95/96 you can still find them in the 80 to 100K range and it will be about half that price (6 to 7K)

I'd only pay 11K if it had some sort of warranty on it and it was in PERFECT condition...as in no cosmetic damage, interior is mint, no clutch problems, no bad history.

I'd pass and find a earlier year...maybe even a Talon they are generally 1K cheaper than Eclipses and you've essentially got the same car.

That is not a good deal. It is about 3k over retail book value (which is too high to start with).

I'd edit any private thoughts out of your first message, copy and paste this in Word, print it out and throw it on his desk. Honestly it will be worth it. Just say you got this off of the Eclipse network. (take this out too but I'll add my comment below)




That sounds like it is about 1.5K too much money. Also, I worked at a dealership and that is absolute bullshit to not let you testdrive. That is his insulting way of telling you he thinks you are not a serious buyer or just out for a joyride. I would take your money elsewhere.
