 Well, I was driving at about 65 in 2nd, shifted to 3rd, let out the clutch, and all hell broke loose. the flywheel came apart destroying my FWD trans, threw 1/3 of the flywheel through the firewall on the passenger side :barf: , and another chunk through the hood OMG . has anyone had this problem before? i will post pics later. anyhow, the heater core is destroyed, the trans. is, the motor is... radiator.. turbo... everything is either shattered or cracked or just plain missing on the passenger side and the middle of the engine bay. This sucks a LOT! ... can crankwalk cause this? my motor is a 7 bolt with a K&N, plugs, and plug wires.. all stock boost and everything. my clutch is basically gone.. only found a few small parts of it on the road... anyhow, yeah... what you guys think? :(

damn dude that sucks! someone a few months ago posted a video of it happening on the track...crazy shit! was it a stock non-lightened flywheel? this is the reason i got a new one when i did my clutch..anyway sorry to hear that man

Take pictures and from now on when ever I post that people need to get an SFI flywheel or else put the pictures up...

Sorry to hear that man...at least no one got hurt. Many years back I witnessed a person get hit by peices of a shattered fly wheel. Its the worse thing I have ever seen and it was 20+ years ago.

Is this common more/less in 1G 6-bolts...?
I am in the middle of a clutch swap - ACT 2600, and I was planning on just re-surfacing the flywheel face. I am setting up my car for track mainly so switching gears at 6-7k rpm.

This is why I stress inspecting things so thoroughly.

Sorry to hear about the car, at least nobody ate a piece of that wheel when it let go.

the flywheel was stock. and yes, it has seen some high-rev time.

what can i do to keep this from happening next time? ACT flywheel?

ACT, Fidenza, Turbo Clutch, SSG, just about any aftermarket FW will do the trick. But ACT is the most popular option.

If want to be extra safe (and if you care about your pass.), you can also get a scatter shield. They are always a good idea, no matter how slow you are. But they are required if you get into 11's.

Swarm,

Any pictures of the damage and the flywheel?

I would like to add them to my large photo collection of others that had the samething happen. For example...

There is a new ThreeSpeed scatter shield that covers (360 degrees) the entire bellhousing for the 1G AWD people. FWIW.

Looking foward to the pictures for my collection.
