So my flex pipe busted at one of the joints. Called a muffler shop and they say I have to replace the whole downpipe at a cost of $300 labor included. Sounds a little bogus. Couldnt a shop just weld a new flex pipe in place?

$300 huh? haha don't let them con you into doing it then, just buy a downpipe from someplace and slap it on (it's a pretty easy job, depending on how stubborn the bolts that connect to the catalytic converter are).. you might even want to consider a high flow cat, a downpipe and cat won't even touch $300, so that is the best way to go...

About 7 Months ago I purchased an APEXi cat back exhaust system. When It was being installed, I found that I had a busted flex pipe. However, the fella who was putting it on for me, suggested that instead of a buying a new downpipe immediately, he could hack it off directly above the flex portion and weld the coupler for the larger 3" system right there, and run the pipe to the cat. It isnt the most "correct" thing in the world to do, but he did it free of charge until I can get a new down pipe (Ive been deployed for the last 7 months) and it was practically the same as replacing the whole turbo back and only paying for the cat back. Just something to consider, economically speaking, its much better than $300, and if you plan on a new downpipe, it can be removed and corrected by a shop with relative ease. Oh yeah, and I havent had any problems in that area since, and they even waranteed the labor for said rigging. Just something to think about, good luck either way.

Yes they could, but they could make more money off you selling you a hack job downpipe with press-bent pipe for more :notgood:

Option 1 - New SS braided flex section ~$45-55 + $20 to weld
Option 2 - New Downpipe $89 (eBay) - $200 (vendors)
Option 3 - Spiral exhaust tubing and a couple muffler band clamps $40 (or weld-in +10$)
