Well I picked up this 1996 TSi on Craigslist in January for $600 and just got going on it recently.

thats the picture from the past owner that he sent me when I emailed him about the car. It has a 14b turbo, a hard intake pipe, a J-pipe, and air fuel and boost gauges. So basic upgrades. He said that the engine spun a rod bearing.

I picked up a 95 Talon TSi a few weeks later with the plans on fixing it up but decided with the amount of frame rust it would be best to part it out.

This car has a good engine. So I stripped it down, got the engine on the stand and down to the long block then pulled the engine/trans out of the blue talon.

here is the Blue Talon waiting to have its engine pulled.

I painted a lot of parts today and I'm gonna get the engine bay cleaned out and start cleaning off the transmission so everything is ready to go back in once my timing components and gaskets come in next week.

Thanks guys. I wont have too many updates till I get my parts in.. Hopefully they will come in over the weekend.

Did a little work today. I couldn't get the crank pulley bolt off so I didn't get the balance shaft block off done. I broke my breaker bar so I need to go get a new one this weekend and ill get it off. So I spent some time getting the parts painted. I repainted the blue interior pieces back to flat black so they don't look ricey any more. I also fitted my head unit into the dash, I need to pick up a wiring harness adapter for it and I will get that installed. The interior is about done. I may swap out the head liner though to make everything nice. I have been cleaning and painting engine parts here is an updated picture.

Got some progress. Still waiting on a solution to the Turbo Oil feed and return lines, the ones that were on the car were leaking pretty badly which is probably part of the reason it spun a bearing.

I removed the balance shaft and all that stuff too when i changed the timing belt.

well I just got her started. Sounds really good. No ticking or weird noises but I am not getting oil pressure for some reason. I don't know if this is something to do with removing the balance shafts... I am gonna drain the oil and put it back in so its up all over the engine and start it again and see if I can get pressure

well thanks to this post

I now have oil pressure.

The car's idle is a bit rough I tightened the idle screw all the way to get the idle to 800-900rpm at idle. It was idling at 1000-1100 when i first started it.

Now I am getting a CEL and my air fuel gauge is reading all the way lean. So what steps to take? run some fuel injector cleaner, replace the fuel filter and add gas to the tank?

On a manual boost controller what is the lowest boost setting all the way open or all the way closed? I always forget, i think its all the way open for just wastegate pressure right?

Any other thoughts on why it would be running so lean? There are no piggy backs on this car, basically stock with a 14b and MBC.

on a mbc , all the way open is "off"
how do the plugs look ? amy chance its a bad or shorted out sensor or eve a bad gauge ?

yeah all the way open or "off" as you say is just running wastegate pressure... so thats like 7lbs or so.

Any way, I swapped the fuel injectors out with the ones from the red car and that didn't change anything. I put in a new fuel filter and that did nothing. I swapped the ECU and that made no change either. So I am at a loss right now.

when i start the car its revving up to 2500 rpm then coming back down to 800ish but as soon as it gets below 1100 rpm it starts to run very rough.

Hey I just caught this thread. I LOVE that blue color on the 2ga talons. I had a 95 and now I'm super pissed I let it go.

Anyway, check some basic stuff to narrow it down:

1) boost leaks
2) compression
3) spark (on each plug)
4) fuel (at each injector)
5) timing

See if you can read the CEL code for more information too.

ok well I got the car running finally, Turns out the previous owner removed the screens from the MAF and the car really didn't like that. so I threw a maf in from a 1991 3000gt VR4 that I had in the garage and it fixed the idle issue. I took it out for a test drive and the brakes feel like they are warped so I am gonna change the front rotors tomorrow and the Transmission Pan is leaking from when I changed the trans filter so I guess I didn't get the gasket to seal correctly. After that is done it should be all good! Then It will get a good wash and wax!
