Fix alignment dowel pin in block?

Long story short, the backside dowel pin and bolt hole, that aligns the transmission to the motor, was drilled out by the previous owner. He had snapped a bolt off in the transmission and simply drilled and tapped a much larger bolt in that location to fix this (through the block and into the trans). My question is, after welding this hole closed in the block, how do I locate the exact position of the stock hole? Is there some way to align the transmission shaft and crank, then drill the hole?

I have access to a machine shop (g/f's dad owns it) and have an extra bell housing that can possibly be destroyed to use as a guide. Please let me know if anyone has had experience with this and ideas on how to fix. Thanks.

Yea, you are going to have to find out where to drill using the bellhousing somehow. Good luck.

How accurate does this need to be? Thousandths, hundredths, or just dam close? I also have a buddies block sitting next to it that has the pins in it that I could make a template from. But I need to know how closely this needs to be machined.

Its been awhile since Ive held one in my hands, but how tight does the starter alignment plate fit? That could be a template if it doesnt fit too loose.

the starter plate bolts to the block behind the flywheel.. if you can get 2 bellhousing (top ones) bolts in and get a dowel in the other side, it should give you a perfect template to go off of.

I have thought of this, however, the bolt holes to the top are not very tight, there is some play in there. Which brings me to my question on how precise this hole needs to be.
