First start, am I just freaking out for nothing?

I just got done rebuilding my engine, and today was the first time I've started the engine in over a year. It's very nerve-wracking. I just wanted to know, is it easy to pick out noises when something is not right? or is it something you just have to know?

Everything sounds good I didn't see any leaks, the timing belt didn't shoot off so i guess i'm good, right? I guess like the title says "am I just freaking out for no reason?"

As long as it sounds like its running good and you do a compression check everything should be alright. Have you gave it a tune up? Checked fluids, plugs, wires, etc?

yes, everything is new timing belt, oil pump, water pump, idler and tensioner, pistons, rods, bearings, thermostat, accessory belts, lifters etc.

I guess that's why i'm freaking out. This is my very first engine build so my mechanic skill is still noob status.

Also I forgot to add to check all your ball joints and suspension parts because it might run fine but if you break a ball joint your gonna have a big headache with your car and a nice towing bill.

Yeah, did that while the engine was out, along with GSX brake swap to fill a little more space under the bigger wheels i plan on getting.

I agree with everyone else and like what kccombs says do a proper breakin with your new engine to get the rings to seat properly.

Yes. Take your time and do exactly as it says. Shouldnt have a problem at all. A newly built engine can be either your best friend or your worat enemy if its not done correctly.

Since its a fresh rebuilt are you runnin full synthetic oil?

A new motor should NOT be used with synthetic oil, use conventional for the first 1500 miles or so to help seal the rings.

I am using 10w30 with break in additive. I guess i'll find out tomorrow how friendly my engine will be.

I cannot stress enough to double check and triple check everything out. Hope you changed the oil after the first 20 min of run time, and there are sooo many break in methods. I know a guy who beat on his the first time it went on the road. I let mine idle for 20 min changed the oil fixed a couple things went to the gas station and on the way there I did my pulls to seat my rings.

Yeah i changed it, but to be honest i think i did mine about 15 min after.

Yeah definitely use some 10w30 non-synthetic oil, I just finished a motor recently and have changed the oil 4 times since 400 miles.

Make sure you change the filter as well everytime as that's where the flakes will be, also pay attention to your oil as it's coming out of the oil pan - look for lots of silver flakes after the first or second oil changes.

You could even crack open your oil filters too and inspect for any large chunks of metal - which wouldn't be a good sign.

Also make sure the entire car is mechanically sound, boost, exhaust everything - you don't want to have anything cause lower compression or weird scenarios that could affect the break-in, make sure you're running stock boost.
