Hello one and all! Finally after 5 years I managed to pick myself up a '97 GSX!
Currently own a GS, so I'm pretty familiar with the 420a. However, the 4G63 is a bit of an issue for me.
Overall car runs great, but there are some issues.
At start, idles perfectly (750-900) but over the course of the drive, when ever it comes to a stop, the idle will vary from 750 - 2200. Doesn't matter when it's running cold or hot, it just likes to change all the time.
Other issue I'm having is the mixture is running extremely rich. I mean rich to the point where if I have the blower going, I can smell it in the car.

Any input would be greatly appreciated, and please keep in mind that I'm still getting familiar with the engine layout. Abbreviation are cool and all, but please let me know what the full name is.

Oh! lastly, for all those other GSX owners...... when doing 60mph in 5th, what rpm are you sitting at?

Sucks- but build it correctly this time. AND PLEASE DON'T DO TO IT WHAT YOU DID TO YOUR GS...how cheesy.

To each they're own. The GS looks different in all kinds of light and it's the only car I've ever seen like that. It look a while to grow on me, but its pretty hot. LOL
Keep in mind, i bought the car and it went ka-BOOM. It's necessary to check everything twice or it drains your back account very very quickly, thats how I see it.

Omg your fins are friedd, that looks so bad. A 16g would be a great start for you., are you planning on staying with stock internals or getting maybe some forged stuff?

Haha. Naaa... it's all good :p

Update on the turbo.
Apparently the one that came with the car is a Garrett T25...... not sure whether thats better then the stock or not, and the one i got with the new engine was a TD04. Still in very good condition but the wastegate got a little dinged up..

Sooo, which one should i use? Get a new compressor for the GT25, or stick with the TD04?

also, just another issue.... Tuning! What would you people suggest? I've been looking into Greddy Profec B, SAFC2, and many ppl have suggested DSM Link.
Suggestions? or would i need DSM Link as well as one of the other 2?

The Garrett T25 is the stock turbo that came on the 2g eclipses, as far as I have seen all it is good for is drying your hair once pushed past stock levels. Are you sure that the turbo on your new motor is a TD04? Is this engine one that was pulled from like a stock car or has it been modified? Honestly with a 2g, if your looking to get the most you can out of the car, ECMlink is your easiest option, if you want to get in an rip things apart a little you could try megasquirt, if your looking for a drag race machine then you could get AEM LOL. If you aren't looking for to much though and you can find a cheap SAFC2, and a palm pilot, I would jump on that, at least to get your feet wet with tuning. Also if tuning is in your future might I also suggest a wideband, to make tuning easier. It's not so necessary at first since you can tune based off the narrowband voltage, but it wil make tuning a lot easier for you and be much more accurate for you.

Thanks Airmail.
Found an SAFC2 for 150, opposed to the 300 i've seen elsewhere. I think it would be a good step, and yea, thats the one that came from this other motor. Japanese import, i just needed to get my car back on the road so i figured throw this one in there, and then rebuild the other block as i SLOWLY get extra cash. LOL
And yea, i looked into it a little more and the Garrett is stock. LOL

I came across Megasquirt a while ago but again, not to sure what to do there either. Might take that jump when i get there. LOL

Well, here's what we've got!
GSX is back online and it running fairly well..... haha
It still has a bit of an idle issue, same as before. It's a little rough to start off, some times just stopping dead, but once it warms up a little it's fairly consistent around 900-1200rpm. But every now and then it remembers it's a DSM and creeps around from 1300-2300rpm at idle.

The new short block was a JDM import, i've been using the same head off of the other engine. There is the correct amount of oil in there, and my oil pressure is still reading very very low (almost not moving) Took off the valvecover cap and took a look and it's spraying oil just fine up top! Solution, prosport oil pressure and temp gauges on the way ;)

And lastly, something is rubbing on the driver side wheel well. Haven't had a chance to look into it too much, but smells like the brakes. Maybe i put the rotors back on the wrong sides? didn't think that mattered, but could be the problem.
When driven for a while, and then going slow, you can hear something ticking or rocking, or something.... I'm not to sure, bored and tired in this 8am class.....

Anywho! thats the update!

Yeah fins on that turbo are goonnnee. Evo 16g would be a nice step up for your new setup id say. Oh and I know what it feels like to have it sitting there LOL I spun a bearing last year and blew a rod out the back of my block. But then again, I think we all have had our dsm sitting at some point.

Yeah, well it's running so good to hear! I'm still on Jack stands doing an awd conversion and 6 bolt swap, it'll be sometime before I'm finished....

Here's a questions.... when i got these winter tires, there were plastic inserts in the center of the rims. I took them out because they didn't fit on the hub. Could that be the source of the noise? I always thought that when using acorn style lugs, when they're torqued, they center the rim on the hub. Correct me if i'm wrong.

Also, it's only driver side front wheel and goes with wheel rpm, not engine. *tick tick.....tick tick.....tick tick.....*
could be almost anything, but that rim does get hot after driving in the city for a little while. I Still think it's the brakes. I'll check it when i get those spacers in and go to install them.

haha, and i don't have a picture of it just yet :p
