ok, im finally ready to start on my 1991 talon tsi awd, and i want to build the motor and the trans needs redoing, i want to keep the stock turbo and i have plenty of spare parts off of about 7 1G dsms and off my 1998 gsx if i needed to use them. the car is stock and i dont need to drive it everyday and i just wanted to know what would be the best parts to use and stuff like that. any help would be appreciated.

what are your plans for the car? If you want to keep the turbo, just do a stock rebuild. Many vendors offer a stock rebuild kit. Diamondstarmotorsports offers rebuild kits. As far as your transmission, I would have it rebuilt from the guys at OGP. (www.ongreenperformance.com). They are very cheap and I talked to them and they offer some good services.

if it isnt broke dont fix it... If your going to keep the stock turbo, dont touch the motor. Theyres no point in rebuildin it, even if you do end up with a little larger of a setup. If you were really serious about building a motor, id do a 6-bolt swap.

Just leave it as is. Rebuilding a motor just to have a rebuild motor is pointless.

considering the car is a 91 talon tsi a 6 bolt swap isn't needed. ;) As far as internals ... what are your goals? You don't need to build it up for a 14b ... probably not even for a 50 trim. Just leave it alone till you know what you want to do with it or until you plan to put a big turbo on and run a lot of boost.

:dsm: if you rebuild
DO NOT USE ANYTHING OTHER THAN OEM MITSU GASKETS!

intake manifoldOMGem 2 layer stainless
fel-pro:paper gasket cant stand the heat and thats where my boost leak was found

exhaust manifold gasketOMGem 2 layer stainless
fel-pro:paper inner with a metal outer layer, does not last

front cover gasketOMGem rubberized gasket
fel-pro:paper, and will leak over time

oil pan gasketOMGem 999 sealant is made by permatex with hte oem md #on it
fel-pro:paper gasket and DO NOT USE,the front cover is not level with the block and it will leak there, thats one of the reasons why you only use sealant!

im not saying anthing bad about fel-pro as i have used there gaskets for over ten years.i have learned these things that i said above from building the 4g63 starting with mine.the four more i rebuilt this year rings, main bearings, connecting rod bearing, oil pump, front cover and the timing belt and so on have been going strong with no leaks.

oops didnt see it was for his 91... Anyways, you def dont need to build a motor for a 50trim. Stock motor is good for 450 pretty reliably. And most will never make that.

If its not broke, dont fix it. Youll save alotta money that way.

the motor has 171,000 miles on it, and when you try and take off at full throttle, about 30 seconds later you might reach 30 mph. i just dont want to start doing mods and have it break, done that to many times on my '98. the cars driveable and all...just dont pull out in front of someone...or stop on a hill...or come to a complete stop at all.

Eagle Rods
Wiseco Pistons
Stock Headgasket
Stock intake manifold.
DIY Ported 2g, SBR or EVO exhaust manifold
2g o2 housing
FMIC

sounds like a bad turbo. replace what's broken. Do a leak down test, compression test, boost leak test, and all that. Then fix accordingly.

exactly. troubleshooting is your friend my friend. you never go and fix something cause you assume its that on any car unless its not that expensive :p . cause 9 times out of ten it wont be it. so if you do a rebuild and its a blown turbo wont you feel like an ass? a broke ass at that :dsm:

i just want to use it every now and then. i want to go ahead and put in different rods and pistons, so if i buy a turbo later on. i just dont want to have to do it twice.

He was considering it.

At 171K miles both the engine and turbo have their "little turkey button thermometers" popped out.

as for my plans or goals, i dont really have any, i just want something reliable that i can start doing mods to

Which is why you use eagle rods... better than 1g's and by the time a machine shop gets done with 1g rods it$ not worth refabing them. Use wisecos because the quality vs price compared to a oe its another no brainer.. You cant just dingberry hone and re-ring a 170k motor and then mod it.. Too loose and the bores would still be "wack" without a real bore and hone job.

He is right he needs a rebuild plus a turbo.. He wants to do the engine first... he is right again.. Then get a bullseye holset, EVO turbo or a PTE.. for a lower price good turbo..
