Hello All,

Thank you in advance for your help!

Heres what ive got. 91 TSI AWD K&N Filter and Cut-Up Intake, Factory Exhaust Minus Catalytic, MHI EVO 3 16g, Generic MBC, Autolite Boost Gauge. Car Runs and Drives Great.

First - I know i should have a wideband to crank up the boost, but im running 14psi right now with no problems, is that too much? Could i be running lean?

Second - This car is my DD and im only looking for high 12's out of it, what parts do i grab next? ECMLink, Injectors, Fuel Pump, Turbo back Exhaust?

I know its boring... emphasis on BORING. however on both DSM's I've found that the best first "mod" is the maintinence the previous owner didnt do or the stuff that is unknown. My 4g64 is similar to your 4g63 that you own in that a broken timing belt or seized water pump could be a 1200 mistake. I noticed great increase in driver-seat-dyno by doing the basics

*plugs
*wires
*fuel filter
*air filter (which you could just wsh your K&N)

Like I said its boring but like you my car is my DD and this took a load off my mind, I NEED my baby to start every morning.

well A wideband is a great tool. I have/had one got it new and it doesn't work. but that would be a good start after all maintence first. Timing belt BS belt water pump new plugs (ngk bpr6es) plug wires, oil and filter. Also a coolant flush wouldn't hurt.

ECM link isnt really a must have if you only plan on running 650cc injectors then you can use a SAFC.
I wouldn't turn boost up anymore. Check out my photobucket account and look at my pictures with my half moon piston from turning the boost up on stock fuel.

Just remember 90 electronics TR unit ecu and stuff like that is 90 only and 91-94 are different.

Timing Belt and all the things that go along with it. I would recommend a certain ebay kit; since it has just about everything you need (OEM parts) for a huge maintenance makeover for about 300$ (if you wanna know which one just ask). Put ALL NEW fluids in it. Proper tune up maintenance. Then I would go ahead and get a turbo back exhaust for starters if i were you. If you are not currently tuning with anything, I would stay on the safe side and run a little closer to 11-12psi with that turbo and your current mods. After that, get a wideband and something to tune with.

Sorry Guys, forgot to include that the previous owner was a mitsu tech at the dealership i work at. It has a Timing belt with 20k miles on it, the K&N is new, New NGK bpr6's i believe gapped @ .028. Car is in great condition maintenance wise except for the oil leaks on the VC and cam plugs (will fix these next week). The thing i am most worried about is running it lean, because i know that the e316g pushes more air than the stock 14b at the same boost levels.

Will i hit fuel cut before i burn a hole through a piston?

The motor has 180k miles on it, but still has 140 compression across the board. If i blow this motor up ill just grab a JDM and toss it in. So what performance upgrades should i head toward next?

It's lame but maintenance, maintenance, maintenance. You'll thank yourself later.

Edit: Nevermind, you were typing as I was. In that case, mod away.

OK if all the basic maintience has been done I'd move to the slightly more fun stuff.

*Diff tranny fluid (I'm having fun with royal purple)
*Short shifter
*Turbo back (inc manifold)
-this would depend on local emmision laws, damn CA

The short shifter on my car made a big difference. I did a B&M the same time I did all steel bushing on the cables and on the shifter plate. Since I drive 40 Miles a day to work this made going through the gears a little more enjoyable. Especially when I paired good shift linkage with the royal purple fluid.

Two quick edits.

*could I get that link to the timing kit you mentioned GSTRYYDER?
*Lets see some pics of this thing ASAP man.

Thanks for all the replies and help guys! I am heading to lunch from work in a minute, will grab some pictures and post.

First thing is first, get a turboback. Get A wideband and get ECMLink simultaneously so you have some fuel control. You should be fine at that boost level just dont touch it any more until you get a Walbro 255, AFPR, then get something to tune it with, like the wideband and ECMLink. Once you do that you can start to turn up the boost a tad and go from there, but to max out that turbo you will probably need 660 injectors or even 780s. Good luck.

Nice looking car. I love the look of a clean 1g. I say go along with what was stated do general maintenance and check your ecu. It is a 1990 make sure it isn't showing any signs of having future failure.

Well do Not use royal purple in the trans. It wants GL-4 only...

umm I did not hit fuel cut before I melted a piston down.

I had the same setup, but had full exhaust. I was running 17lbs for about a year and never had any problems. Next step exhaust then fuel system and computer. Gotta pay to play.

Thanks for all the replies! I got alot of good info out of this thread. I think im going to keep octane booster in the tank until next week when i can grab a pocket logger. Then next is turbo back exhaust, Wally 255, Aeromotive FPR, 650cc injectors and SAFC. I also need to stop being a ####y and figure out how to launch this thing!

Sounds like a perfect setup, it depends on what your goals are if you want to get a bigger turbo than a 16g then definitely get ECMlink, do it right the first time :)
