Alright, I tried to rekindle my old thread on this subject, but nobody was biting:p

So here goes, I've read a ton of articles and most all deal with the TB's on 91 or later. I know all about how the FIAV works, but the 90 is a little different and I'd like some opinions, as to whether I'm going about this the right way.

I pulled the bottom plate off and cleaned up the chambers. I've taken the ISC out for clarity ( it WILL go back in ), I pulled the "triangle plate off the side where the plunger sits and pulled it out. Now I'm left with what looks like a brass spike inside that's held in place by a dowel pin. From what it looks like it closes off the lower coolant pipe in the picture and the other coolant pipe is somehow recirculated from that part of the TB. I planned on sealing off just the Inlet side of the FIAV as stated in an earlier post, but want to completely make sure I'm plugged all the right areas.

I was planning on dremel cutting the coolant nipples off and plugging the holes, but if I can seal the chambers inside as well, I think that will make sure there is absolutely no air leaks.

So has any one pulled the second plunger out? or do I just leave it and seal off the coolant nipples once I cut them and seal off the inside of the FIAV?

Thanks for the continued help guys. :thumb:

whats your block off plate look like?

I don't actually have a block off plate. From what I have gathered the block off plate is really only for the 91 and onward TB's. The difference in the 90 TB is that the TB is a 1 piece and what you see in my pic is the bottom of the TB minus the cover plate and I was told in a previous post just to plug the port upper right and put the cover plate back on.

What I've done is gone one step further and pulled the FIAV plunger out and in an attempt to seal of the whole FIAV chamber I found that where the coolant nipple comes in on the lower side, it passed coolant over what looks like a second bi-metallic plunger that opened or closes the return loop for the coolant. All of that I guess is really irrelevant at this point other than I need to know if someone has gone this far on a 90 TB before and how they dealt with the second plunger that's attached to the TB inside the FIAV chamber. I plan on cutting off the coolant nipples and sealing them off, but the problem I now have is the upper left port on the TB is now open to the lower ports for the ISC.

So do I seal off both ports and cut the nipples off and seal it back up or is there any need to seal the upper left port at all.

I hope I'm making some sense here and thanks for the help.:thumb:

I am going to say that you are on the right track with this for sure. But, I don't know if it is necessary to seal the upper left either. I am going to block mine off when I go to rebuild the head but I am just making a blockoff plate at work. You can even make one out of a few soda cans if you're feeling inventive

Thanks:thumb::thumb:

I'll post a pic once I get the mod finished.

what did you decide to do the block off

Cut off and sealed the Vac nipples and coolant pipes.

OOOPS. didn't see my photobucket was missing some pic's. I'll upload them tomorrow. Sorry!!

For the 91's and up you can eliminate the coolent and isc by putting an entire block off plate correct?

Yeah, I wish I had one, couldn't find one at the local salvage yard either, so did my own.:thumb:

New pic's of the TB are up on photobucket.

Thanks for the interest folks.

Hey Im about to do this with mine. I'm finally convinced that my problem is the FIAV so I'm ready to take the plunge. LKWTSI I've got a few questions:

did you pull the FIAV mechanism out or just seal with it in there?
what did you use to seal your valve chambers?
how did you plug the coolant lines you cut off?

Your TB looks really good in those final pictures...nice job!

Read up.

One question. which is better, pull the FIAV out and fill with JB weld or screw it down as tight as possible and then fill those areas? If Im correct I have read where it gets pulled out and fillled and also where it's filled with it in there. I was leaning towards pulling the whole thing out and filling the chamber.

I got the FIAV out and it was a b*tch to unscrew. I was wondering if I could put it back in and put some washers behind it so it it remains in the closed position as it is supposed to be when warmed up. Would I need to still block off those ports? I know I would still need to block the coolant lines.
