I was out on a couple runs the other night and the next day i noticed my car sounded like it had an exhaust leak. Tourqed everything down and still hear it.

Also i was driving the other day and as i was decelerating i noticed a small cloud of white smoke float around to the driver side from the exhaust. I checked my turbo for shaft play and it had no side to side but a decent amount of in and out.

Any ideas?

Excessive shaft play in any direction is an indication that the turbo's on it's way out and that oil is leaking past the seals due to the clearances not being what they should. I'd start shopping around for a new unit.

Sorry!

Beat me to it. :) That's what I get for sleeping in today.

Is there any oil in the lower intercooler pipe? That would be your other sure indication, but like Andy said, any noticeable play means it's on it's way. Just think of it as time to upgrade. :)

Well, there are a few other signs of total failure, all of which are pretty noticeable. The puffs of white smoke are your first indicator. As time goes on and the bearings and seals continue to fail, the smoke will appear more and more, until it's smoking between shifts, during cruising speeds, and under boost. You'll find copious amounts of oil in the lower intake pipe when it gets to that point. Usually with this much play, by now the compressor blades will have started to rub the compressor housing and begun to bend and possibly chip off. Boost will drop a few psi, then a few days later you won't be able to boost over 0 psi. That's the basic death scene of a turbo due to bearing/seal failure. The time will vary from car to car, so no one can give you a life expectancy estimate. Start planning to replace it now, though, so when it finally goes out, you'll be all set to yank it out and put something bigger and better in.

Keep us posted on how things go, and good luck.
