So my car has been down since October for a rebuild and I was finally ready to fire it up today when I noticed that when I attempt to turn the engine over, the wheels turn. The wheels turn when the car is in neutral and when the clutch is depressed. Only thing that was done that could affect this is installing a welded center diff. i installed a welded center diff out of another 2G transmission I had laying around and put the case back together. When turning the engine over by hand it is very difficult and I can see the the wheels moving and it feels like it might be in fifth gear. I can put it in neutral and into all of the other gears but always feels the same except for reverse, reverse feels different. Is it possible I f***ed something up when putting the transmission back together that would cause it to be stuck in 5th gear?

2G 96 AWD 6-bolt swap. Clutch never changed from what I had working before.

If it will turn over freely with the clutch petal pressed in but not out in nutral then yes something is not assymbled correctly in the trans

Did you put the trans on the engine in neutral ? I own an auto but I no you have to put the trans in neutral for caviliers when installing the trans back inLOL

Don't quote me on that tho hah

No, there's not much of a difference when the

yeah, I definitely figured that but was hoping someone screwed up like me and had an idea what I did wrong.

To answer you question about if I installed the trans on the engine while it was in neutral, I am not sure. I don't think it was in neutral when I put the case back together because I was locking the gears together to get the nut back on to the gears

So apparently the transmission was stuck in reverse. I popped the cover off and found that I couldn't shift into 5th gear and the hub was locking the slider out. The reason for this was, when I put the transmission together the first time, I shifted into reverse before putting the end cover back on. The issue with this is, I kicks the hub keys out and locks the slider out of neutral and halfway into reverse. Since it was only halfway into reverse I could get out and roll through the gears but it would bind up due to it still being in reverse. Just remember, if your going to test reverse with the cover off, you need to hold down the synchro the whole time to keep the keys in place.

Correct, and you need to make sure you have 5th synchro aligned and centered when installing the 5/r hub and slider assembly so you don't jam the synchro.

Well, I still had the issue once it was all together and figured out that the slider wasn't the only issue. I know know what happens when you over-torque the stake nuts. 5th gear hub locks to the gear causing it to be stuck in gear.
@twicks69 I saw a lot of posts of yours mentioning to torque your stake nuts properly, but I never saw you post the consequences of over-torquing them. I guess we all know now.
