I've been researching brake upgrades trying to decide the best way to improve brake performance and stopping distance without braking the bank and I keep seeing mixed responses. Half of those who comment on subject claim that big brake upgrade kits improve brake fade and response but have no significant effect on stopping distance. While the other half claim that huge 4 pison calipers and rotors improve stop distance as well as fade and response. It seems to me that a more balanced brake system combined with better tires and pads will help decrease stopping distance. Has anyone actually done a comparison between different brake setups on DSM's to see which setup yielded the fastest stopping time?

I have looked at most of the online kits and most of them look very nice, however, they are very expensive and aside from the sport compact car ultimate street car challenge (both dsm's were using stoptech brakes) I have yet to see any comparisons between different brake upgrades that proves that one stops any faster than the other.

you need to read up on brakes man...

stopping braking fade does decrease the stoping time/length.......

on my dd i have powerslot rotors with axis metal masters up front and hawks in the rear and braided SS lines and its just fine.. i can stop pretty quick.

On my 300M (heavy car) I bought drilled and slotted rotors and installed the NAPA Ceramix pads. It was a big improvement over stock in both fade and stopping distance. Might be something to look into for better braking performance without breaking the bank. I plan on using this same setup on my 1G when it's time for a brake job.

Brakes are no better than the tires you are on.

For a street car: stainless hose flex lines, Porterfield R4-s pads and the best tires you can afford.

These kind of responses are exactly what i'm talking about. I appreciate all of the reply's but all I have heard so far after all of my search attempts on dsmtalk and tuners are people arguing one side or the other with no real evidence to prove either side is correct. I guess I'm gonna go ahead and try reeeeeaaaally sticky tires (hoosiers?)and awesome pads and test the stopping distance on my own and then compare my results to the known stopping distance of dsms equipped with aftermarket big brake systems (the two eclipses in scc ultimate 3 both stopped from 60mph between 125.5 and 128.8 feet with stoptech brakes)
Considering that the car that had the fastest stopping distance was a 350z with 14" rotors and dual piston brembo calipers (103 feet) with stock rear brakes, I'm a little skeptical that the stock eclipse brakes w good tires and pads will stop anywhere near this quickly or that rear brake bias is as big a concern as it is usually made out to be. Of course, on the other hand, the second place car was a supra with stock brakes and awesome pads and it stopped quite a bit faster than the other supra with stoptech's (ABS seems to make a huge impact).

I have switched to AP 4pot with 13" from AEM"big brake" (caliper relocation kit) last spring and have noticed a big difference. I have s/s lines and AEM 11.5 rear kit with red pads(rear) and ferodo ds2500(front) with their racing fluid. When you slam the brakes at 140mph down to 60mph the car just stops NOW. The bigger.thicker rotors have 0 fade compared to the AEM..
below is a pic with the stock rear and the AEM(11.5)
