I'm a little confused...

My car was overheating the other day, and I realized it was because my fan wasn't turning on.

Well then I turned my AC on, and both fans run great.

I just installed DSMLink V.3, does this have anything to do with it?

If not, what the heck is the deal. Its not a huge deal since whenever I want the fan on I just turn on my ac (Doesn't work anyway, LOL) But kinda annoying.

Only one fan is suppose to run until it get to hot and then both should kick on so your high fan speed relay under the hood sounds like it has gone bad.

If neither fan is coming on you may need to replace your thermo fan switch, its located underneath your radiator fan (not your AC fan) it has an electrical connector on it you need to unplug first.

Try this, for some reason this was a regular issue with my buddy's 92 gst.

look it the bottum of the radiator next to the lower hose, you will see the thermo switch which turns the rad fan on,2 pin connector, disconnect it jump the two wires in the connector with piece of wire then turn the ignition on,if the fan is good it will turn on.

The thermoswitch in the bottom of the radiator makes the ground connection for the relay to turn the radiator fan on. The Green/Black stripe is the wire that needs to be grounded to turn the fan on or just jumper the connector.

Hi Steve

Is there another way for me to check out how the radiator fan works?
I have tried to arc it in the lower thermostat cable. The fan did not turn on.My A/c fan works fine
Which of the connectors on the upper side of the radiator fan should i hookup to the car battery?

Thanks

Go get the factory manual set if you don't already have them.

In the cooling section of the Engine Chassis Body manual you find the wiring disgram for the radiator fans.

There are different fuses for the two fans, so that's the first place to check.

The Radiator fan is powered from Fusible Link 2 feeding pin 3 (red wire) of the radiator fan relay.
Pin 4 (blue w/black), one side of the relay coil, comes from the ignition switch and should have power when the ignition is in the START or RUN position.
Pin 2 (green w/black) is the other side of the coil and runs to the fan connector (pin 1) and then to thermoswitch in the bottom of the radiator. You should see battery voltage there whenever the ignition is in the START or RUN position.
Pin 1 (blue w/red) is the output of the relay and runs to the fan connector (pin 2) and then to the motor.

The other two pins in the radiator fan connector are grounds, the blue w/black for the motor and the black for the thermoswitch. Make sure that both are good grounds.

Does the one fan come on with the a/c? If so switch the plug to the other fan and it should come on. Then you know it is your fan switch.

sorry to bring back a thread from the dead but im having the same exact issue.

my radiator fan works perfectly but ONLY if i have the AC turned on. it wont turn on by itself when the engine reaches a certain temp. i know the fan itself is good because when i connect it to the ac connector it fires right up as well as connecting it straight to the battery.

maybe a sensor or switch is broken some place!? ill have to check everything and see.

now i WOULD just run the ac wire to the rad fan side but i dont have ac in the car and i want to get rid of all the remaining ac stuff including the fan and its fuses and crap. i want the radiator fan working on its own!

Pull the connector off the thermoswitch at the bottom of the radiator and short out the two pins. If your fan comes on then the thermoswitch is bad or you have so much junk in the bottom of your radiator the switch is insulated from the coolant.

Ya, take the radiator out and give that thing a total power flushout with a garden hose. It's amazing how much CRAP dwells in the bottom of a radiator ... and it will really help with the cooling system as well..

..and flush the block out while you got the thing torn apart ..

and, it's quite handy if you're at a light for a while, or in the drive-thru lane at a 'choke and puke' fast food restaurant, to purposely push in the AC button to kick on both fans to keep this system at a calm level.

i just recently flushed the entire system out. everything is clean as a whistle! and yeah i use the ac button to have my fans on always. doesnt bother me to have it on always but i would just like to have my fan work on its own for some reason
