factory guages, aftermarket wiring?

I found 2 random cut wires that are white, really small, looks just like white earphone wires (16-18 guage). Traced them both going up into the factory guages so I removed the glass in front of them and it turns out the white wires are connected to every guage in the dash, after doing some research I think they might be part of some sort of aftermarket dimming switch.

The factory dimming switch had its wire unpluged, and stripped off by the previous owner probably for powering aftermarket guages, so I fixed the wire and plugged it back in, and the guages light comes on and it dims, but I'm not sure if the guages are working or not, as the engine is not ready to be started up yet.

I also noticed how the entire factory guage piece plugs into the dash behind it, most likely where the factory power supply for the guages are, so it had me wonder if there's even supposed to be wires right in front of the guages?

Again each guage has it's own 2 wires, each guage connected to eachother and then finnally splicing with a random set of 2 wires that are not connected to anything...I've yet to put a power source to it as I didn't know if they were in fact power wires or information wires of some sort....would it be safe to put power to the wires? would it be safer to try and use a small 9 volt battery?

Will be able to help more when you have pictures. If all else fails and they do not work I have an extra gauge cluster if you need one.
