Using the spray will be ok just using masking tape and newspaper so over spray will not mess up the glue but you still will have to add more glue to make sure it resticks back to the roof of the car. I spray one of my friends roof red and cleaned the old glue off and put all new glue on it and it has not had any problems at all and it's been about 3 months.

Um, I'm talking about spraying the headliner with the fabric still on the foam shell. Not understanding exactly what you'd mask off.....WTF

Yes raptor it will work, after you spray it with the Duplicolor or w/e fabric dye it will be alittle rough so spray it really good with one coat then go over it with something hard or even your hand and make sure you work the fabric good to break up the excess, then spray another coat and do the same. Should hold up nicely.

You might find just replacing the fabric to be a bit less work. It's not a horrible job.

I tried replacing it twice, once with vinyl and the other with a velvet type fabric, each time the glue melted right off and the headliner sagged off. I just got tired of fooling with it. I thought about fiberglassing it and see how that turns out. I've always wanted to learn how to fiberglass so maybe it's not a bad idea to try it on the headliner shell.

It actually wouldnt be hard at all to do the shell if you have any fabric and foam on it right now. Just slap some resin on it to make it hard and then put about one or 2 layers of mat on the top of it, you may not even need that because the fabric will soak up the resin making it rock hard. then sand and paint. Good luck trying to get that sucker back in there without scracthing it though...

No, all I have right now is the shell. Oddly enough, I'll sometimes get compliments on it because ppl don't realize it's just the foam backing and think the job is custom done,

To those who've dyed fabric before (i.e. sun visors), does zachakagoat's 'spray and rub' method work? Anytime I've dyed fabric, it's always come out feeling hard afterwards...but I've never tried rubbing w/something... Any suggestions?

this technique works very well. works great when dyeing carpets or seats.

It comes out hard just spraying it, but softens up over time and with use.

If you are working with a piece of fabric that you think MIGHT come out slightly harder than others, rub the spray dye in with a damp rag and it will slightly dilute it and let it get down into the fabric easier without coating up on the surface. I have used this method on many vehicles I have done for customers and the price/quality ratio is amazing for most people. Also the fact that it is a dye is a good thing for people wanting to do quick touch ups.
