Hey i am thinking of getting a 50 or 60 trim in the future. Do you guys think that it is better to get an internal wastegate, or external? i know you can route the external back, but i want to know if there is a downside to having an internal wastegate?
thanks in advance

boost creep or uncontrollable boost at low psi depending on the turbo model and manufacture. for instance Slowboy told me the SBR GT-14 can be ran @ 17 psi and up without any problems on an internal wastegate. anything below that on an internal is not recomended.

On my AGP RS60T I can hold 15 PSI with their billet actuator. Never tried to go lower. Mark

I think the whole point of having a big turbo like that is to pour in race gas and run higher the 25psi - in which case an external becomes a necessity. Besides, don't external wastegates add their own unique sound? Another great perk of owning a turbo car.

i was curious how this sounds, because i plan on getting a v-trim running 21-24psi; and i seriously have been deciding to get an external wastegate flanged to my exhaust manifold.

do you know a site or someother place, where i can hear when the external wastegate opens up?

Externals make for additional power. It gives the exhaust a larger less restrictive opening to dump to. To give you an idea, I shaved 3 tenths and gained 3mph by switching to an external alone.

Yes, you get the additional roar when it opens up, but that's a perk to me. I love tubing a buick century with an old man/woman driving and their windows are open. Makes them soil their depends.

hey sweet97 is that the $699, 60 trim trubo that you have? i was thinking of getting that or the 50 trim, but i read somewhere the 50 trim makes more power if you are running under 20 psi. is this true or does a 60 trim beat it out anyway? have you raced a 50 trim? and do you have an internal or external wastegate? i was thinking of running an internal wastegate on the 50 or 60 trim at 20 psi all of the time maybe higher.

wow are u serious..

id advise you to do a search before taking some of these replies seriously..

for instance a 50 trim > 60 trim.. i have a 50 trim, but i wont say its > then a 60.. everyone has different goals.. depending on what you want to do one or the other will fit ur application better..

i run a PTE 50 internally gated.. stock 2g mani and o2 housing to a 3" RRE downpipe.. the RRE downpipe starts off at 2.5" before the flex then 3" after..

wastegate boost without boost control is 15 psi.. and stays there steady.. no creep.. or spike.. i run it at 20-21psi as my moderate boost level.. again no creep or spike.. this is with the supplied internal wastegate..

as for more HP with an external.. i havnt found any real big arguments or proof that this is true or not true.. so i wotn say anything on it.. however there are good amount of folks running internal who have put up good numbers and times

and my personal advice.. ur from SJ? so am i.. because of that id get an internal.. smog is a bi***.. i passed with all my mods (in profile) legally.. with the big turbo anda ll.. except going back to stock injectors.. external with a dump.. i dont know how ur going to pull that off.. unless u pay a few bills..

RS60T is a 60-1, NOT a 60 trim.

Thats all he needed to know was that a 50 trim is better than a 60 trim in any dsm application.

Why you ask?

1.) As there is no one out there that is stupid enough to put a 7/8cm^2 mitsu housing on a 60 trim cartridge, one would have to go with a full garrett conversion (not cheap)

2.) Lets look at some compressor ratings (i'm not even going to bother with a map):
50 trim/T04e: 49 lbm/min
60 trim: 35 lbm/min

Oh wait, an evo3 16G flows about the same amount and it bolts right up.

3.) Spool time:
I will reach 20psi in third gear at 3400 rpm on my RS49.
I will reach 20psi in third gear at 3200 rpm with Evo3 16G.

I can't speak for anyone else, but I would happily sacrifice 200rpm for an additional 100+ horses

Now, in simplicity i was hoping everyone would do their own research, but when someone asks "Should i go with a 50 trim or 60 trim" I simply stated it out.

i just got my tial 38mm external wastegate, and before i had internal with dump to atmosfhere. Now, should i leave my internal wasgate to be opened or i should close it(weld it). Someone told me that i can use both

Not sure what you are saying here. I have the RS60T which has a 60-1 compressor wheel that spools crazy fast and will hold 15PSI with the actuator I have. It is capable of flowing 60lbs/min. I did a 3rd gear pul and started at 2500RPM and it started to boost immediatly and reaches 20+ PSI before 4000 RPM. Where did you get a 60 trim flowing 35lbs/min? Of course the RS60T has the 60-1 which is a superior wheel compared to the 60 trim, flows more at low boost acording to Bullseye Power. My only problem is some compressor surge if the rpm's are not kept up under load going up a steep hill. Over 4000RPM's no problems. Again my spool is quick running through the gears. Mark

If you're referencing the T04E 60 trim than that's a bigger wheel and does outflow a 50 trim wheel.

I was referencing the 60 trim as in like.. a Super 60.
However we all know that no one uses a straight 60 trim these days, everyone just uses 60-1's (i.e- Frank 5, RS60, etc etc)
