exhaust silencer

I have a buschur full 3 inch exhaust w/ testpipe, so it's pretty loud. would a silencer take away power?

Yes it will take away some power. Have you ever really looked at one and how small they make the exhaust exit.

No it wont take away power. Mufflers do not give the car any significant power gain at all. A muffler does just that....muffle the sound. A straight can muffler is used in conjunction with an exhaust to relive back-pressure, and a good exhaust will relieve up to 2-6 lbs of backpressure. Putting a silencer in will not leave a mark on the power, it just closes the hole that the exhaust finally leaves the vehicle. Think of it as a tip on a gun. Does it stop the bullet...no...does it have anything to do with the barrel width...no. Thats what silencers are for. To supress sound. good luck man.

Do you mean to tell me that reducing the the size of the pipe at the end of the pipe doesn't restrict airflow? Or are you saying that restricting the airflow doesn't affect power?

Hereitcomes, silencers on guns do slow the bullet down, which means the gun is LESS POWERFUL...just thought you would like to know.

He never asked if he would lose a lot of power just if he would lose any and it's gonna be more than .5. Enough with the gun stuff that's not what this thread or site is about.

You might and you might not. Every car is different. Only one way to really find out. I don't understand why your exhaust is so loud. I have a 3 inch d/p and 3 1/2 cat-back with not cat and my car is pretty quiet until i get down on it.

hmm...interesting, but yeah, my exhaust is pretty loud. i don't think it's too loud and actually like the sound of it. it doesn't sound like a ricer bumble bee. my wife thinks it's loud though. i also live in family base housing and a lot of people here like to complain.

The only definitive way you're going to KNOW if you're losing power from a silencer is to do two runs on a dyno; one with, one without.

you WILL notice decreased performance with a silencer in the tip. blocking the flow of the exhaust reduces noise. I had a Greddy EVO for a little bit, and with the silencer in the tip (it didn't come with one, I bought one) it was very quiet. However, it felt like the car had 30 less horsepower and the turbo took forever to spool up.

well then i have a question i have a custon made exhaust that is 2 3/4 inch from the o2 dump to where the cat would be, then 3 inch back to my skunk 2 muffler. havnt tried it with my 16g but, on the 14b with the silencer out the car is really loud and the turbo felt like it took forever to spool and when it spooled it was like a smooth excelleration. But with the silencer in it spooled at 3 1/2 thousand rpms and the power hit alot harder. Basically on the butt dyno the car felt alot faster with the silencer in. So why would this be?

Probably because the boost came all at one instead of a more gradual spool up.
