I have been searching around tuners gathering information on exhuast manifolds, but I can't seem to find a thread that has info on all 4 of the common manifolds for 4G63T's. If you guys can shed a little light on my situation I would greatly appreciate it.

Firstly, I'm getting a 16G turbo to replace my blown 14B. I have a 92 Talon with no current mods other than the free mods. I have a feeling that my exhaust system is failing so I want to get some new pieces, i.e. exhaust manifold, turbo, o2 housing, downpipe, cat., and cat. back.

My question is what are the major differences in spool times and reliability of the 2g, evo3, tubular, and SBR manifolds. I've heard tubular mani's flow well but increase spool time which would be working in the opposite direction that I'm working in considering my car will rarely if ever see the track, it will be mainly for a street car. That said I know that the SBR's are very coveted but the price tag seems to be quite high on them, even used when you can find them.

So if you guys could let me know how much better one flows than the other and how much more reliable the pieces are I would be very thankful,
R.J.

2g flows much better than your stocker especially when ported to 7cm and your turbine housing is ported to match that. Evo 3 flows more than 2g and will still hold up just fine. Tubular is great but expensive and has a higher risk of cracking at the welds unless you buy a really good one. The SBR manifolds are awesome however they are pricey. I would go with the evo 3. All of these manifolds will make your turbo spool up sooner which is what you want.

check out the GT mani from turbochargers.com 145$ with all bolts and gaskets :thumb:

I say if your gonna do something once might as well do it right. I would just get the sbr manifold because it flows really well. Comparing the tubular and the sbr mani . The sbr is pretty cheap and like they said has mear possibility to crack. like sbr says
"manifold has the same external dimensions as the evo, but inside is where we really shine. The runners are larger, the collector is bigger, and it just flat out flows more"

just my 2 cents

If you want to go the route of a tubular manifold, I'd also say consider a DNP SS Tubular manifold. It helped me spool my stocker 200 RPMs quicker. It doesn't seem like much, but it's a smaller turbo none the less. Now I have the FP3052 and it's an awsome combo :rocks: . Also, it has been "proven" by many people in the DSM Community.
Here's the link to The Speed Factor (where I bought mine):

I would love to get my hands on the SBR mani. Perhaps they should hand a couple out *ahem* so that people can leave some feedback on them... :)

I'd also suggest doing some fuel mods with your 16g.

Thanks for your replies guys, I really appreciate all of your input. So at this point I'm swaying toward an EVO III or a tubular. I would definately go with the SBR but I think its just a bit out of my price range.

I must have not understood it correctly when I read this somewhere but I thought that tubulars raised the power band, as in lowered low end power and gave you more up top. Also, can tubulars be tapped for an EGT? Thanks again for your guys' help and I'll keep you all updated on my project.

A cheap used 2g mani will go farther then your 16g ever will so it's pretty much up to how much money you want to spend.

Correct. Just ebay yourself a 2G manifold and port it. This will do just fine.

I dont see how SBRs manifold is too expensive but you are still considering a tubular unit. Tubular manifolds are typically alot more expensive than any cast units.

The difference in manifold design doesnt move your power band. It slightly improves overall exhaust flow.

The thin-walled runners of a tubular design are usually too thin to accept a thread depth to properly hold the sensor in place and is not a common practice. Generally a bung is welded in to solve this.

IMO you would be better served to spend the money on the manifold and turbo, then skimp on the rest of the exhaust. You can save hundreds of dollars with a cheapy DP (but get a mandrel bent one) and then buying exhaust tubing bends and fabing your own exhaust system. My exhaust system cost me a grand total 300 dollars and it is a full three inch from O2 back. The 300 came from the Buschur DP, the rest of the exhaust was free and I welded it my self. If you are wondering where I got the pipe so cheap, well I work for a diesel shop in my spare time and I just grabed the scrap piping from various Bully Dog and Banks system installs. Most factory diesels use a 3" or 3.25" mandrel bent mild steel exhaust system. So IMO you would be better served to purchase the best mani you could because you would be hard pressed to find cheap manifolds with the flow and strength of a high quality unit, and you can find exhaust tubing for CHEAP CHEAP. Besides a pipe is a pipe (but stainless last longer and Titanium is lighter. then again if you had that kind of money you wouldn't be worrying about the cost of the Manifold).

BTW I forgot to add in the 200 I paid for the Apexi Muffler, but you do not have to use an expensive muffler. Factory diesel mufflers work, or you can get a turbo for like 20 bucks.

I don't mean to sound like I'm disregaurding your reply, but I've seen a lot of tubular manifolds on a "certain website" for less than the SBR manifold. Not taking anything away from the SBR, I've only heard great things about that manifold, but I have found tubulars for better prices. With that said, I tend to question the quality of the tubulars that I've seen on this "certain website." Considering that it will be driven as a street car, a cast manifold may be a better alternative.

Can a 2G manifold be ported to the size of an EVO III or an SBR? I'm more than willing to put in the work to port, but if I can get a quicker spool out of an EVO III I would really prefer that piece to the 2G without getting too much more expensive.

Yeah pacesetter, ssautochrome and quite a few others have less expensive alternatives but reviews seem to be mixed. Like you said, the quality may be questionable.

The differences between an evo and a 2g aerent worth the extra money. I doubt you would be able to tell one from the other. It really comes down to how much you want to spend. If I were you I would just pick up a 2G and port it.

EVO3 mani-$210
SBR-$300
Ebay 2G- No more than $100 usually less
That GT manifold for $150 seems to be quite a deal but it is fairly new and I know nothing about it.

So I think I've decided on getting a 2G manifold because I've decided to forgo the 16G and just go with anothter 14B or rebuild the one I have if it's not too messed up. I need to start reading up on porting these badboy's. I know VFAQ has some helpful porting guides on porting, anywhere esle I might look?

Thanks,

R.J.
