one of the studs from my stock turbo mani snapped. so now the stud is stuck in the head (where the turbo mani bolts on to). Any one know any ways to get the stud out? its causing some major exhaust leak and keeping my 2g from reaching its full boost potential. thanks for the help.
 
The bit stated above is called a easy out an is probably the best way to get that bolt out if its broke off clean. Use alot of penetraing oil an if you have access to a torch to heat it up that always helps.
 
I got a stud stuck in the head and I used one of those locking removing drill bits or w/e they are called. Basically you drill into the screw the opposite way so when ever the bit catches, it pulls the screw out. I forget what the bit is called though sorry :/. Maybe someone else will chime in.

its called a screw/stud extractor kit.

dont buy a cheap extractor kit, because it will break inside the broken screw, and its nearly impossible to drill thru the metal of a broken/stuck screw extractor. buy a good kit, or take it somewhere they will do it good.
 
Forgot to Say if you do use a torch dont hold it in one spot.An hold it atleast 6 to 8 inches away you have an aluminum head an will turn it to putty if you hold the flame in one spot for too long.
 
Its called a bolt extractor.... Yes that isa good way to go but becareful cus sometimes the tip ofthe bolt extractor breaks inside instead of drilling out the broken stud.... And then you will be left with a major problem cus now you have to drill out the broken piece of steel LOL. which alot harder to drill thru than your average metal =P

you know what... even the good ones brake LOL. trust me LOL.

the best way to take out a broken stud is to just build up enough weld so that you can weld a nut to the end of it and just take if of like if your taking out a regular bolt. even if it brakes at the welds you can just simply reweld them and keep trying.

i dont want to start a war or divert the purpose of this thread but the heating method actually works against it.

this applies to most things but we will stick with metal for my example:

when you heat metal it doest become more flexible, but at the same time it becomes weaker and most importantly it expands. Meaning when applying heat you are expanding it creating more pressure against whatever is stuck with it and making it weaker more prone to break/ or create other stress cracks and possible permanent warping so this method is not good.

now metal also contracts when cold but up to a certain density (not going to apply any rocket science or go to far with this) so if you where able to freeze the affected part (i would say about -10/-15 degrees for an hour)

then these metals will naturally separate each other i.e. stud from turbo, also it makes the metal X3 stronger because of its density, therefore you can wrench the piss out of it with out it stripping or breaking.

this is not being book smart ok, i turn wrenches for a living (aircraft mechanic) and this is what we apply when we encounter situations alike.

a tap & die are used to repair damaged threads or screws/bolts respectively; they will not help you get the broken bolt out. As stated above, use a bolt extractor/EZ Out/whatever you want to call it, or have a machine shop get the bolt out for you.

Once you get that bolt out, if the threads in the head appear damaged you could then use a tap to clean the threads up.
 
I'd spray it with PB Blaster, run to Lowes while it's soaking, grab the "Grab-It" extractor and call it a day.
 
Depending on how flush it snapped off, and how anal retentive you are about things like this (I know I am very) this might be one of those jobs to bite the bullet and take it to a professional (machine shop or something similar). My friend and I went through 2 of his Snap-On tungsten carbide drill bits just trying to drill the hole for the screw extractor on my snapped turbo to 02 housing bolts. I decided to spend the money and have a machine shop drill it out. Prob the best money I've spent on the Talon thus far.

That is the Best/Safest way.
Thats what theyre gonna do if you take it in.
