So I’m having a dilemma, on my new build I’m planning on running E85 majority of the time. So I revamped my fuel system with FIC 2150cc injectors, Walbro 525 pump, and redid my fuel pump rewire with 12-10 gauge wiring and 40 amp Bosch relay. My question is has anyone ran into excessive current issues with this pump? Melting relays, wires etc.
A very, very, very reputable tuner stated this pump was not a good choice. His words ”The base pressure matters most. The higher the base pressure the higher your operating current. The 525 are really a shitty pump, they flow a TON of fuel yes, but electrically, they are inconsistent, hit or miss, some just pull more current than others for no reason. They'll melt everything including themselves. I get cars at my shop very regularly with fuel pump problems that turn out to be 525 installs with melted wiring, relays, etc. We switch them out to 450s and that's usually enough with good wiring but even those burn stuff up sometimes. It isn't cheap but brushless is the way if you want reliable. Or PWM the 525 with a solid state relay. The 525 was never designed with running full blast all the time. Any OEM application of those pumps (hellcat) is PWM modulated.”
