I've been searching for the past few days on information on how to make an EVO III Transmission work in a 1g AWD and still haven't found what im looking for. I have the transmission in the car and bolted up to the motor. The problem i am having is that it will not go into 1st, 3rd, or 5th gear. I know that the clutch is good, so it has to be a transmission related problem. If anyone has done this swap, can you please provide me with some information on what is all required to make this set up work. Please helppp!!

The trans has a different shift shaft assembly than your domestic unit. When you go to 1st, 3rd or 5th you are having the cables 'pull' on the assembly. What is happening is if you are using the wrong brackets the cables can be sitting too far forward and unable to pull far enough to engage those gears. I would pull the cables out and try shifting the trans by hand and see where they sit. If it's different than where the cables are putting them then that's your issue.

Also, I hope you didn't just blindly stick that trans in your car without checking the front diff gear ratio first, because if you didn't, it's wrong and going to smoke the center diff.

Yeah im pretty sure that it is the cables, i had to mount them back further to even get any gears at all. I didn't check the front diff gear ratio. The previous owner had the transmission in the car when i bought it. It did shift alright before the head gasket went and i had to tear it all down. Im going to switch back to a 1g awd transmission eventually whenever i get more money together for a solid rebuild. From everything i've been reading it seems like it's going to cause more harm than good to try and make this EVO 3 Trans work.

I too thought about this setup . There's one for sale here on a local listing for a good price. The tranny is brand new including transfer case and ring and pinion rear end. But not so sure after reading some threads.

Well thats what he claims , Brand new never used, works on any DSM:hmm:
Its on Orlando's craigslist by the way.

If you are able to, find out the transmission serial codes -- there are two on the bellhousing that can tell us the information regarding its age and model.

These two numbers are stamped into the bellhousing along the mating flange with the engine block.

The casting you are looking for on the bellhousing is a flat spot with a stamped in serial number. An Evo 3 5-speed transmission would have one of the following part numbers:

W5M33-2-UPFE Evo3 RS with front LSD
W5M33-2-UPYE Evo3 RS non LSD
W5M33-2-UPWE Evo3 GSR with front LSD
W5M33-2-UPGE Evo3 GSR non LSD

The second casting is a 17-digit vin code. The 10th digit deciphers what year the transmission was built. If your 10th digit is "M", then it is a 1991 transmission, while a "N" would be a 1992 transmission, etc. I have attached a link below showing what it would look like for example:

It will work in a 1G IF you swap over the the shift shaft from your 1991 transmission while it is apart.
