Evo III Motor swap info in here

I had it when I was living in Europe. They are NT, but the same CR and would work on a turbo car with no problem.

I lived in Europe too. Nice place for guys like us. As far as N/T pistons go, I believe that they have different ring lands and aren't designed to be used in forced induction engines. That is why some people talked about the evo (8?) 8.8:1 pistons and seeing if they would work for us but, haven't heard a whole lot on that. All that seem to come of that was, they weren't usable for our motors due to the fact that they have the intake and exhaust valves on the opposite sides for us. Now, if the evo III pistons have that compression and a part number is available to us it might help.
 
4G63 Motors typically go from $900 to $1400 including manifolds and turbo. Most will be 89-91 GVR-4 motors with a TDO5-14B turbo. You have a 20% chance of getting 91-93 motor with a 16G turbo. You have a 5% chance of getting a 91-93 RS version motor with the yellow bodied 510cc injectors and a Big 16G. It is very hard to tell for sure exactly what motor you will be getting. The best way to try to ascertain which it might be is to ask them to look at the turbo and the color of the injectors.

After extensively looking at the turbo is seemed to be an evoIII 16g, but as you said, maybe its a Big 16g? Also, the valve cover is the same as the US version, but it says MITSUBISHI on the top portion. (It came cracked, wish i couldv'e kept it.) I am VERY confused.

The overseas company i bought it from marketed the motor as an EvoIII swap, with pictures of front clips and such. False Advertising much??
 
damn this thread has all sorts of mixed up info.

Guys you all have to remember ....If you get a used motor there is a good chance that parts have already been switched out. Even if it has yellow top injectors, that dosent mean its a EVO motor ...maybe they were added later ...who knows?

I own a EVO1, and the same goes for me too ...I can't be 100% sure what all is stock, and what isnt stock.

I know all EVO motors are 7 bolts, and I never heard of any EVO's having Cyclone intakes on them.
My EVO1 dosent have a intake manifold on it.

I'm curious as to why you wanted to go with the EVO motor? Were you just trying to get a JDM motor as a replacement ...and that is what you got? Or were you getting a JDM replacement motor, and the EVO motor was an option?

Personally I think the Head and Intake manifold are probably the best part about the early EVO motors. Other than that, they're pretty much just a regular Crank Walking 7-bolt. Hardly at all different from the motor that came out of your car.

You should think about keeping the intake mani, and installing it on your car ....it could make a good difference in power.
 
Ahhw I got mixed up between what he said about the intake side and exhaust side ...Saying "they are about a 1/4 inch wider on the evo".

When I said bigger I was talking about the inside of the runner(which I got mixed up), not the length. I know the EVO runners are shorter ....thats why I suggested he re-think selling the intake mani, and installing it on his car.

plus, I can't remember who said it, but just the rarity and bolt on ability of this manifold makes it worth while to those who can find it.
if he already has it, I would say hold on to it as long as you have a 7 bolt head.
even after I would keep it just to say I had it:D

I'm sure I can come up with the part number for the EVO III pistons/rods. I'm tyring to get ahold of my buddy that lives in London. He has had from EVO 1 to EVO 3 and has a shop. EVO 8 pistons won't work...

Ok, I'm going to ask for pictures of EVO I-III motors bc everybody comes up with different stuff.

-turbos;
-CR, pistons AND CRANK is different then the 7 bolt DSMS!
-intake manifold;
-cams;
-cyl head is 2G ALIKE, NOT exactly a 2G.. EVO heads have different port geometry;
-we all know 2g trannies are smoother then 1gs!
-if you get a front clip or engine+tranny, most evo III tranies have double syncros and different gear ratios then 1G/2G/s. NOT TO mention the crappy recalled TCASE!

I could continue....
The early EVO motors are not another 7 bolt crankwalker!
 
EVO 8 pistons do work 3 of my friends have them in 6-bolts. you just flycut the piston for the intake valves. My machine shop guy will not do them anymore due to the cost of the mods to run them but it dose work.

I like the toppings on the EVO motors too. I just don't like the core, because the bottom end is a 7bolt from the crank walking era. Mitsu didn't come up with the non crank walking 7 bolt until 98/99.

When I get around to rebuilding a engine for my EVO1 I'll go with a 7bolt EVO head, EVO intake Mani, EVO3 Exhaust Mani, EVO3 Turbo, EVO3 O2 housing, on a DSM 6bolt bottom end. (OR a 98/99 DSM 7Bolt bottom end if I can find one)

I'll try to get some pictures of my engine bay tonight
 
Intake manifold

The intake manifold on the evo has shorter runners and a bigger throttle body. The throttle cable connects on the opposite side of the throttle body. I just pulled the manifold, fuel rail and manifold bracket and replaced it with my 2nd gen stuff. It all bolts in just fine.

I hate to ask about something that would be so obvious, but what do you mean the throttle cable connects to the opposite side of the throttle body? Do you mean the cable connects on the front side of the intake manifold? Like in between the motor and manifold, instead of the back side by the firewall?

Cool. Did you happen to confirm what the piston compression ratio was?

the evo TB actuate from the side that we normally have the TPS on and the TPS is on the side that is our throttle cable actuator.

Right. I'm not sure if I can switch it around yet ot not. I haven't tried.

The head ports are bigger on the Evo Head. Unless my caliper/micrometer isn't working hahaha.

So far so good on the motor. No knocking, no smoking and it pulls pretty good as well. I am running a 21 psi spike and it drops to 19.5-19.7 by 7k rpm's. I still have the small 16g on there. I haven't had time to take it to the track yet, but I think its a bit stronger than the last 7bolt I had in there.


The reason I went with an Evo 7bolt was because it was the cheapest longblock I could find. When the connecting rod went in the other block it took out my piston, balance shaft, block of course, took a nice piece of metal out of my crankshaft and when my motor ate my piston, it tore up some of the valves as well. So the only things that were still good were the cams and the external bolt on parts for the motor.
 
Hmmm thats odd. I might have it mixed up in my head, but I really think my 1G DSM and E1 JDM TB cables are on the same side. Maybe one of us has a non OEM (non JDM is more like it haha) part that did not originally come on the motor.
I meant to check, and take pictures last night but I got home too late and forgot.

EDIT:
OK at 1st I just thought I was mix-up but now I know I'm at least right about MY stuff.
My 1G DSM, and E1 JDM throttle body cables both hook-up on the same side. I found this pic of my EVO. Its not very clear, but you can see the TB cable looping from the front side around to the back side of the Manifold, and the TPS up front just like my 1G.

Stickman, can you get pictures of your TB, and Intake Mani for us?

I'm kinda puzzled myself. I don't know if mine is the original part, or yours is. Or maybe both???

OK , so my buddy confirmed that stock pistons found in the EVO III have 8:8.1 CR.
I have the part number for them also, but it is irelevant for the US market since it is an MRXXXXXX part number not MD, and can't be ordered thru Mitsu dealers, not localy anyways.

I can actually order the Evo III exhaust manifold from a mitsubishi dealer. If you give me the whole part# I may be able to order it.
