everything is apart and I don't know which piston goes where

A friend of mine took his 6 bolt for a rebuild, but then he gave up. So he gave me the engine. The thing is that everything is apart and I don't know which piston goes where , and he did not mark the caps on the rods so everything is a mess. So could I just get new pistons and rods and install them in any cylinder? If I have to ill get a new cranckshaft... Thanks

yes if you get new pistons and rods they can be installed on any cylinder but after they are installed they have have to stay in the same cylinders, i always take a number punch and tap the number on the bottom of the cap and the side of the rod to keep them straight.
